Tennis Australia may have sent a subtle message to teenaged tearaway Bernard Tomic, leaving him off the squad to next month's Davis Cup playoff round against Japan.
Victory in the May 7-9 tie tie would send Australia back into the World Group playoffs, hopefully ending a few harsh years in the wilderness of the worldwide team competition.
Captain John Fitzgerald will go with his old reliable in veteran Lleyton Hewitt, back on court after a second hip operation in January. Backing up will be clay-loving Peter Luczak, last summer's LA finalist Carsten Ball, and doubles specialist Paul Hanley.
The tie will be played on clay in Brisbane so as not to interfere with the buildup to the French Open.
"We think we have a good strong team capable of winning our way back into the world group," said the optimistic Fitzgerald.
Tomic has had his past problems with both tennis authorities as well as the Hewitt camp, with charges flying last summer that the youngster snubbed a chance to practice with two-time Grand Slam champion before Wimbledon.
Luczak, ranked 72nd,has achieved his best results on clay, while world No. 115 Ball has played Davis doubles this year in the win over Taiwan.
