  • Murray rebounds, charges into Rome third round

    4/27/10 11:49 PM | Ricky Dimon
Murray rebounds, charges into Rome third round Andy Murray earns his first clay-court win of the season by defeating Andreas Seppi in straight sets at the Rome Masters on Tuesday. Murray awaits either David Ferrer or Potito Starace.

Andy Murray got blown out in his first clay-court match of the year at the Monte-Carlo Masters, but he recovered to cruise past Andreas Seppi 6-2, 6-4 in the second round of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia on Tuesday evening. Murray cracked 11 aces, won 90 percent of his first-serve points, and never dropped serve on the way to a routine victory in one hour and 20 minutes.

The fifth-ranked Scot won eight of the match's first nine points--including a love service break to open the proceedings--and never looked back. He saved the only two break points he faced all day at 2-1 in the first set before adding another scalp of the Seppi serve at 3-1. Murray served out the opening frame of play without any trouble at 5-2, capitalizing on his second set point with a crushing forehand winner.

Rome's No. 4 seed added another break to begin set two, seizing it with a forehand winner after saving two game points just moments earlier. From there it was all over, as Seppi never saw a break point in set two and showed no signs of being able to get back on serve. The 47th-ranked Italian held the rest of the way to 4-5, but Murray finished the job by setting up match point with an ace prior to one more huge first serve.

"After the start he started playing very badly and I started playing good and so I was very satisfied with that," said Murray, who lost to Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-2, 6-1 two weeks ago. "I did very well in the second set especially and so everything was good."

Next up for Murray is either Potito Starace or No. 13 seed David Ferrer. Starace rolled over Jan Hajek 6-2, 6-2 on Monday while Ferrer, a semifinalist in both Monte-Carlo and Barcelona, dismissed Evegeny Korolev 6-4, 6-1 in his opener.

Vamos Andy for your next match! I haven't watch him in Rome. Is he in good form, deuce?

remi , 4/29/10 8:54 AM

remi: Thankyou for asking. Andy did look good and a very positive interview in Guardian today saying he's been working hard down gym and on practise courts while in Barcelona. I think he just needed some time out after the AO, not paticularly cos he lost, but just because he worked so hard b4 that one. Ferrer will give him a good match but hopefully Andy will come through. Come on!
