David Ferrer eases past Evgeny Korolev in the Rome first round on Tuesday. Viktor Troicki also advances when Thiemo De Bakker retires with a groin injury early in their third set.
David Ferrer converted all five of his break-point opportunities to beat Evgeny Korolev 6-4, 6-1 in the first round of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia on Tuesday evening. Ferrer needed just one hour and 10 minutes to set up a second-round clash against Potito Starace.
Although the 17th-ranked Spaniard served well throughout the entire match (81 percent in the first set, 78 percent in the second), he was broken twice in the opening frame of play. In an exclusively baseline battle, however, Ferrer had no problem breaking Korolev three times.
After Rome's No. 13 seed came up with a clutch hold at 5-4 to clinch the first set, Korolev went away without much of a fight. Ferrer dropped only six points in his last four service games and he added two more breaks before closing out the proceedings at 5-1.
Viktor Troicki also advanced to the second round when Thiemo De Bakker retired due to a groin injury with Troicki ahead 3-6, 6-1, 1-0. Only one hour nine minutes had elapsed despite more than two full sets of tennis, as De Bakker disappeared quickly after a fast start.
The 21-year-old Dutchman, coming off a semifinal performance in Barcelona, used two breaks to seize a one-set advantage. De Bakker also broke serve immediately in set two, but that's when De Bakker lost his way. Troicki won the next seven games before his opponent called it quits. Next up for the 37th-ranked Serb is No. 7 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
