  • Djokovic breezes into Rome third round

    4/27/10 9:37 PM | Kelli DeMario
Djokovic breezes into Rome third round World No. 2 Novak Djokovic made a successful start to his 2010 Rome Masters campaign, downing second-round opponent Jeremy Chardy in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.

Rome finalist Novak Djokovic needed just an hour to defeat Jeremy Chardy early Tuesday. The 22-year-old comfortably held all seven of his service games, never facing a break point in 60 minutes of competition. The Serb controlled every statistic in the match, en route to converting five of seven break-point opportunities.

Chardy failed to play himself into contention and he held just four of 23 points on his second serve. Djokovic capitalized on a continued weak second serve from the Frenchman, winning 13 of 14 points in the second set. The world No. 2, who crushed 20 winners during the match, completed the afternoon with 81% of his first serves won.

With the second round victory, the Serb extended his lifetime edge to 4-0 over the Frenchman. The 2008 Rome champion is now 19-5 for the 2010 season.

Djokovic is scheduled to face either Thomaz Bellucci or John Isner for a place in the quarterfinal.

And no one is asking John Isner about it, Kelli DeMario?

yeah, Bellucci is a heavy favorite, but I would not assume anything based on Bellucci's current form.

and Isner just beat Zeballos, who is basically the exact same thing (only slightly worse and less experienced at ATP level) than Bellucci.

Djokovic needed all five sets in Davis Cup to dispatch Isner, so this won't be a walkover.

Oh yea it will, Growltiger. He is better prepared now.

Or so she says optimistically :S
