Lleyton Hewitt returns to Davis Cup for Australia three months after hip surgery as he leads the team into a World Group playoff tie against Japan in Brisbane.
The contest will be on clay so as not to disrupt player preparation for the fast-approaching French Open. Hewitt has returned to action this month after his medical procedure, playing in Houston and Barcelona with Rome on the programme this week.
The 29-year-old will lead the team at the May 7-9 tie on clay in Brisbane against Japan. Australia is fighting to return to the elite World Group in the worldwide competition.
"I think it is a mighty effort for Lleyton to make it back," said captain John Fitzgerald. "It speaks volumes about his commitment to Australia and to Davis Cup that he has put such a focus on playing this tie and getting us back into the World Group."
The winner will reach September playoffs for a World Group place.
