Robin Soderling will face Fernando Verdasco for the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell title, after knocking out Thiemo de Bakker in straight sets Saturday afternoon. The Swede is through to his second final of the season.
World No. 8 Robin Soderling made quick work out of surprise semifinalist Thiemo de Bakker on Saturday, breezing to a 6-1, 6-4 victory in 75 minutes. The 25-year-old, who surrendered only one game on serve, secured four of 11 break point chances during the match. Soderling successfully advanced to his second ATP World Tour championship match of the season, having advanced the same stage in Rotterdam. With the semifinal-round win, he extended his 2010 record to 20-5.
Soderling took full advantage of a shaky de Bakker, who gifted a quick service break on a forehand error. After saving double break point at 2-0, the Swede consolidated to reach 3-0. The French Open finalist controlled the baseline rallies, as he collected two additional break point at 4-1. The insurance break came for Soderling, who pushed to 5-1 on another forehand miss from de Bakker. An unreturnable serve on set point sealed the 32-minute set for the World No. 8.
The Swede led 2-0 in the second, as the Dutchman continued to err with the forehand wing. A second break came in the third game, once de Bakker donated a costly double fault. Soderling turned in his only loose game at 4-1, relinquishing a service break with a forehand struck long. The 25-year-old recovered the momentum to earn match point at 5-4. After saving a break point, Soderling closed on a netted backhand slice from de Bakker.
Soderling is set to take on fifth-seeded wildcard Fernando Verdasco in Sunday’s title match. Verdasco rallied to down fellow Spaniard David Ferrer in three sets, 6-7(3), 7-5, 6-1.
