  • Rich get richer as Wimbledon payout goes over the top

    4/21/10 3:03 PM | Johan Lindahl
Rich get richer as Wimbledon payout goes over the top Wimbledon winners will benefit from another hefty prize money boost, with the All England club rounding up the numbers to an even 1 million sterling apiece ($1.53 million) for this summer's champions.

The rich just keep getting richer during the grass season at an event which proudly boasts of doubling its prize money payout over the past decade. One official even suggested that the one million figure represents some kind of psychological prestige breakthrough for the posh event.

The global amount on offer in a country whose economy can hardly be called the healthiest in Europe: $32 million, on par with the US Open.

That total payoff is up $1.75 million since 2009 when Roger Federer and Serena Williams cashed the champion's cheques.

"Wimbledon exists in a highly competitive market place and the world’s best players who create and drive the interest," said club chairman Tim Phillips. "The level of prize money should be appropriate to the prestige of the event and as a full and fair reward to players.

"Players are what this tournament is all about and we need to fairly reward their phenomenal effort," said Phillips, whose event finances much of the annual budget of Britain's Lawn Tennis Association.

The prize boost also cushions the millionaire crowd from the recent steep fall of sterling against both the dollar and a euro.
