Stanislas Wawrinka and Florent Serra score Tuesday victories over opponents whom they also defeated last week in Casablanca. Wawrinka takes out Victor Hanescu in his Monte-Carlo opener and Serra edges Stephane Robert.
Stanislas Wawrinka beat Victor Hanescu for the second time in three days on Tuesday, scoring a 6-2, 6-4 win in the first round of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters. Wawrinka, who topped Hanescu 6-2, 6-3 in the Casablanca final last weekend to earn his second career ATP title, advanced in one hour and eight minutes.
This one progressed in similar fashion, with Wawrinka breaking in the first game of the match en route to a quick 2-0 advantage. The 20th-ranked Swiss broke again for 4-1 before serving out the first set at 5-2.
Wawrinka won 14 of 15 first-serve points in the opening frame of play and never faced a break point, but he ran into slightly more difficulty in set two. He saved all three of Hanescu's break chances; thus Wawrinka's one break-point conversion in six tries was enough to finish off the proceedings in straight sets. A clutch service hold at 5-4 booked the No. 13 seed a second-round meeting with Ernests Gulbis, who eased past Marco Chiudinelli on Monday.
Florent Serra also scored a second victory in as many weeks over fellow Frenchman Stephane Robert. Serra, who survived Robert 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the Casablanca second round, prevailed 7-6(6), 3-6, 6-4 on Tuesday. After two hours and one minute of a back-and-forth affair, Serra earned a second-round encounter with No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic.
Despite losing a tough first set 8-6 in the tiebreaker, Robert battled back and took complete advantage of weak serving by Serra. The world No. 64 won 14 of 21 points even when Serra put his first serve in play, and Robert broke four times in five return games.
Just as he did at the Grand Prix Hassan II, Serra used his big-match experience to subdue Robert in a final set. Robert, who was contesting only his 17th career ATP level match compared to Serra's 233rd, surrendered serve twice and could not recover. Serra served out the proceedings at 5-4 to advance.
