  • Tag team Djokovic coaching plan comes to end

    4/12/10 3:50 PM | Johan Lindahl
Tag team Djokovic coaching plan comes to end A tag-team eight-month coaching experiment has been ended after Novak Djokovic announced he is no longer working with American Todd Martin.

The Serb, who is the top seed at the Monte Carlo Masters, didn't spell it out, but it appears if a clash of tennis and other cultures might have caused the split with the former Australian and US Open finalist.

Martin was brought onto Team Djokovic before the US Open last summer and worked with Djokovic during mainly American events. Regular Slovak coach Marian Vajda handled most of the rest of the year.

"Todd found it difficult to understand who I am, how I like to work," Djokovic said. "It seems there will always be a problem having two coaches. Todd has specific ideas on some issues of work. There were no major problems, but changes in my service did not work out. It was a good experience and I'm not sorry for it."

Djokovic will be taking aim at personal improvement during Monte Carlo after modest results on American hard court last month in Indian Wells and Miami.

But he said fortunes went better on an Indian Wells golf course, where he produced a personal golfing best of an eagle on a par-four hole.

"I'm not sorry for it"

Well, we are!

I don't think American coaches suit European players temprementally. Look at Andy and Brad Gilbert, a disaster!

Larry Stefanki has done well in the past, but yes deuce, I do see your point.

on the other hand, we must remember that Nole was going thru a slump in form even pre-TM, and some of us thought TM was the answer. If all of this has nothing to do with TM, its a shame that his coaching career is effectively ruined becoz of it!

back to the baseline grind.

rfzr , 4/12/10 7:40 PM

""You're always going to have problems like that when you work with two coaches," said Djokovic. "They did not understand each other very well."

Aaah! THEY did not understand each other! Now I get it...

OK, OK...it's showtime again.
Just remember the last year... big Nole's effort in clay season when he was chasing Rafa...
Nole and Vajda...like family... Monte Carlo is ours!!!
AJDE NOLEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

I see AndyM is playing doubles as is Nole and they both won their matches today. Maybe that means a new start for both guys!! Can always be an optimist!

"changes in my service did not work out"
Why was it attempted at change in the first place?! Novak had quite a decent serve, one that saved him many a time. It was strong, fast and precise. Served many aces per match. The thing that works fine should not have been worked on. I thought his net game was THE thing to be improved. Nothing more.

"changes in my service did not work out"

good point, what were actually changes in his serve? techique, power, finesse?

rfzr , 4/13/10 12:37 AM

rfzr,
I don't know. Something was obviously wrong since his shoulder has been injured for some time. I think that injury dates back to Dubai. I know he played injured in Davis Cup.

My guess is some technique that didn't really suit him, caused it. We'll see what happens next.

This is the article from ESPN:

I find it interesting that Martin mentions that the relationship changed in Miami and IW. Read his comments carefully. what I can say is it seems, him and Novak are just too different for one another, with very different approach to training and expectations.

bianca , 4/13/10 5:03 AM

You know, this is so strange. Nole spoke so positively about it earlier on during the AO.

mara002 , 4/13/10 5:14 AM

just 3 words - THANK YOU NOLE! Now, maybe tougher part for us fans - we'll see were we right about Todd causing problems..Oh, I hope we were! Ajde, Nole!

OllyK , 4/13/10 6:42 AM

awesome news!!! maybe now we'll see the old Nole!!!! the good serving fast hitting nole, i missed him.

mriiidula , 4/13/10 7:18 AM

mriiidula, I agree........ Bring the 1st serve back!

bianca , 4/13/10 8:02 AM

glad djoko dropped that guy martin.
what would americans know about tennis.
they suck at tennis.

america was dominant in tennis when only america was playing tennis, the second other nations started playing the sport, america was reduced to dust, just a spectator.

same thing happens in golf, hardly anyone outside america plays golf or has gold courses.

european players dont need these americans to teach them anything.

djoko could teach martin how to play tennis, not the other way around.

well said atr

I think Marian Vajda who has coached Novak for years and Todd Martin did not see eye to eye.

Probably, Novak had to decide who has done more for him and the answer was clear, Todd had to walk!!
