Chela rallies to capture Houston title Unseeded Juan Ignacio Chela fought his way to a fifth career clay-court title, outlasting third seed Sam Querrey at the US Men’s Clay Court Championship on Sunday. The Argentine defeated the American in three sets.

Juan Ignacio Chela added ATP World Tour title No. 5 to his resume Sunday afternoon, rallying to dismiss Sam Querrey, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, in two hours and 25 minutes. The veteran posted his first championship-winning run since 2007, when he took home the title on clay in Acapulco. Chela improved his 2010 record to 10-9.

After a tense start to the match, Querrey earned break point at 3-3. A forehand error from Chela gave the American a 4-3 advantage. Querrey failed to consolidate, committing a handful of first-serve misses and a wild forehand strike. The 22-year-old regrouped to break at 5-5, using crafty net play to regain the edge. Triple set-point came at 6-5 for Querrey, who struck a backhand winner to close in 54 minutes.

An evenly contested second set contained no breaks until 5-4. Querrey struggled with his first-serve, falling behind set point. Chela kept the ball in play, leveling the match once the American pushed a forehand well wide.

The Argentine faltered with the forehand, dropping his opening service game in the third. A physically fatigued Querrey gave away the 1-0 lead immediately, once again missing with the forehand. Chela held multiple break points at 2-1 and 3-2, but could not convert. Querrey continued to struggle, as a trio of unforced errors and a double-fault cost the American his 3-4 service game. The 30-year-old collected double-set point at 5-3, sealing the victory after a final forehand error from his opponent.

Chela completed the afternoon with 79% of his first-serves made and four of 13 break point opportunities converted.
