Controversial Australian teen Bernard Tomic will kick off his Monte Carlo bid against tough German veteran Benjamin Becker.
Bernard Tomic is more than a decade younger than his Sunday opponent, but even at the tender age of 17, the Australian has already spent his fare share of time in the headlines. Along with claims that he is the future of tennis in Australia, the teen has also been embroiled in a highly publicized rift with countryman Lleyton Hewitt.
Most recently, Tomic ruffled feathers by accusing Australian Open officials of causing him to lose a match due to late night scheduling.
Tomic will have a tough task in getting past Becker. The German is a solid payer and he has been playing well in 2010. The world No. 39 comes into Monte Carlo off an impressive round of 16 run in Miami, where he took out Indian Wells champion Ivan Ljubicic and Tommy Robredo before falling to eventual champion Andy Roddick.
The Aussie is ranked 298 in the world. His single ATP level achievement was a first round victory at the Australian Open. He had a good tournament win at the Challenger event in Burnie, but his first clay Challenger of the year resulted in a first round ouster.
Becker is going to be too solid for Tomic to handle. The German in straight sets.

his excuse will be that tennis australia booked his outgoing flight immediately after his first match therefore to get on it, he had to lose!
he was knocked out first round last year, the same will happen this year unless becker retires or arrives drunk. the boy HATES clay. he only likes the colour of it, yet he said years ago that by the time he turns 18, he will have all for grand slams under his belt.

Tomic vs. Becker ON CLAY!??!?! This will definitely be one of the worst matches of the entire year that doesn't involve Oscar Hernandez.
RickyDimon , 4/12/10 4:21 AM
zare: On Andy's behalf I accept your apology, thanks.....
deuce , 4/12/10 7:47 AM
its disgusting the tomic bashing in here.
jealousy and hatred.
u ppl are jealous tomic is the next great thing, he is the real deal, u cant accept it that tomic will domiate in the future.
tomic is actually good on clay, u will see him school becker.
im glad tomic is getting into these draws, good to see the tournament organizers came to their senses and gave a wildcard to a future global superstar instead of some mug that will get beat 6-0 6-0 and be a waste of space.
bernie will prove that he is worthy of getting a wildcard.
and the aussie open organizers screwed bernie over against cilic, i mean 1am in the morning for a 17 year old boy?
crazy stuff. what were they thinking.
it disrupted his sleeping patterns, and his energy level dropped being up for so long.
tomic could whip roddick on clay anyday that im 100% sure.
roddick is a total mug on clay.
tomic beat becker 6-4 7-5
attackingtennisrulez , 4/12/10 7:56 AM
atr: is this you or your brother posting?
homos , 4/12/10 1:33 PM
um,why do u ask homos? atr's always bin a fan of tomic. (as for me, i just hope he lives up to the expectations. its been ages since we've had a great tennis player)
tj600 , 4/12/10 3:05 PM
ATR,
you have guessed it right the score for first set 6-4 but it's won by becker, not atomic.
Raindrops , 4/12/10 3:49 PM
ATR what you talking about??? Tomic is a complete bunny on any surface. On clay hes a shocker and becker will chop him up so easy! I think his technique is really bad and on clay that continental grip is going to make sure he hardly ever wins a match... I got becker at $1.43... thanks for the easy money!
Geezer , 4/12/10 3:59 PM
Becker beat Tomic - 6.4.6.2
nadline , 4/12/10 4:14 PM
when you win six games against Beck ON CLAY, you know something is wrong
frankly, when you win six games against Becker on ANY surface...
RickyDimon , 4/12/10 4:22 PM
yes i know tj, but it's a long story and i'm in no mood to explain. atr should know what i mean. it was a laugh anyway.
"its been ages since we've had a great tennis player"
don't count your chickens based on his junior records, he's not great - yet. let's wait and see if he can transfer his verbal energy to the court - next chance he gets.
homos , 4/12/10 6:00 PM
@homos..
"the boy HATES clay. he only likes the colour of it, yet he said years ago that by the time he turns 18, he will have all for grand slams under his belt"
did he really such a thing?? and if he did say , did he say about junior slam or senior??
bcoz if he said so about senior slam, that is the biggest joke i have heard..
i guess he might have said it about juniors..
anyway he lost..
so it will be long before he does something noteworthy
clayking , 4/12/10 6:49 PM
Oh my god...what's now???
...it disrupted his sleeping patterns... maybe he should take a nap after lunch???
...bang...bang...OK kid, you can go home now and take care about your sleeping schedule ...
ATR...you really know how to cheer me up:-)
zare , 4/12/10 10:30 PM
clayking: yes he said that and he was talking about the pro tour - he had no plans to remain in jrs by that age. he has totally left the juniors now even though he still can play. i should explain that he was about 13 when he said that so could be excused but he and his father have made bold statements before so no surprise it comes back to bite them.
homos , 4/13/10 3:33 AM
I am an Aussie and can't stand this obnoxious teen! He acts like the world owes him something...together with another Damir Dokic in waiting, his father.
The biggest mistake Tennis Australia made, was to throw money after this kid. His head is so high, his nose is scraping the clouds.
I guess TA just found themselves in a situtation with no, and absolutely, no positive prospects after Hewitt in juniors and did and is doing everything they can to help Tomic become the next best thing and carry the weight of Australian public's expectations on his shoulders.
Bad money I say, as I as an aussie will never barrack for him!
bianca , 4/13/10 5:29 AM
that's not true. there were promising/talented prospects after hewitt, before bernard. TA didn't look after them properly so they quit the game - probably went on to play footy - and NOW they have no more prospects so they have little choice but to back the young loud mouth.
homos , 4/13/10 7:08 AM
i don't agree...who Luczak? Klein?
I seem to remember a few interviews with different TA officials (over the last few years)...talking and emphasisng the difficulty of the transition from a junior to a senior player/level...also emphasising the fact that there havent been many players since Lleyton and how sad it all is for the proud tennis nation like Aus...now they all salivate over Tomic
bianca , 4/13/10 8:13 AM
homos: got joke, made me laugh even though remotest possibility that atr has a brother, is not a happy one
didn't Tomic win USOpen juniors? Doesn't always translate but can. Yes, yes, know I'm biased cos Andy won it!
deuce , 4/13/10 8:40 AM
no, not luczak or klein (klein is hopeless), they're still playing. these guys totally quit, they don't play anymore. they won itf events, some impressive records, some from rural areas. they quit because of the way TA treated them. they were interviewed. i can't remember details/names but the blame lay squarely on TA. don't think most people heard of them esp now they don't compete anymore.
yeah tomic did, also youngest to win ao, broke all orange bowl records, etc. can translate of course but he should let his racket not his mouth do the talking.
homos , 4/13/10 9:04 AM
@bianca and homos
i do not know much about australian tennis currently.. but i remember 2 particular guys..21 or 22 years old.. one was nick lindahl and other was kirsten or something.. i do not remember the 2nd guy's name.. they were in top 200 or so.. and i remember nick lindahl defeating xavier malisse (a former top 20 player) at some qualification in january 2010.. must be ao..
so what are their prospects?? .. they are higher ranked than this tomic boy..
clayking , 4/13/10 10:02 AM
Why is so much attention being paid to Tomic, at 17 he is §295 in the world, his career titles looks like this:
Singles Career Titles (0):
Singles Career Finalist (0):
Doubles Career Titles (0):
Doubles Career Finalist (0):
So what exactly is his claim to fame that he should even merit his own thread on TT. I just don't get it. Many players have achieved far far more at that his age.
nadline , 4/13/10 11:12 AM
@homos
were those interviews shown on tv recently? if so, what programme? With Tomic, when he won his 1st Round match at the AO, Jim COurier,hu was commentating said he had POTENTIAL to do well in the future(said that he was very crafty and smart like Murray, but not a great mover atm) But he simply talks too much. Im aussie, n I doubt he'll get as much support as LLeyton, unless he lets his actions do more talking.
tj600 , 4/13/10 11:30 AM
nadline,
I don't think he deserves his own thread yet either. Here are some possible reasons TT thought he did:
1. He won some junior GS
2. He's controversial i.e. got suspended, has a big mouth, etc.
3. TT just wants to rub in it because ATR supports him
chr18 , 4/13/10 1:20 PM
I hate Tomic's attitude but I have seen him play a few times. he's got great talent, he will definoitely be a force in hard court tennis if he stops trash talking.
Nothing , 4/13/10 2:26 PM
chr18, I get the point. ATR is one poster I don't read, so the fact that he is a fan of Tomic has passed me by.
nadline , 4/13/10 3:20 PM
clayking, not sure. they are not consistent. ranked higher but also older than tomic by 4-5 years. lindhal has some strengths but time will tell. he beat tomic in the final playoff for ao qualifying, why tomic got a wildcard to ao. don't know kirsten. interviews were recent but also some years ago in tennis magazines/newspapers, tv, since he was about 10 years old.
here's one of many about his big statement:
http://www.theage.com.au/sport/tennis/all-the-rage-bernard -tomic-20100108-lz12.html
tj: i heard that courier comment. nakamura is helping him with his movement. he has natural talent, soft hands, not a power smacker but able to slice well- why those who haven't played him sometimes have trouble with his pace. he may get similar support like lleyton if he starts winning slams...who knows. right now, i'd like him to just shut his big mouth.
homos , 4/13/10 4:28 PM
@homos..
the guy i was saying is carsten ball.. think the guy got any chance?
clayking , 4/13/10 5:28 PM
yeah but i don't think he will fulfill it :)
