Sam Querrey defeated 2009 finalist Wayne Odesnik in the semifinal on Saturday, advancing to the title match at the US Men’s Clay Court Championship. The third seed is set to face Juan Ignacio Chela Sunday afternoon.
Sam Querrey reached his first ATP World Tour final on clay Saturday afternoon, outlasting countryman Wayne Odesnik in three sets, 7-6(4), 1-6, 7-5. The 22-year-old is through to his second championship of the 2010 season, adding to an earlier success in Memphis. With Saturday’s victory, Querrey extended his record to 13-8 this year.
After two consecutive breaks, both players held five of 5 service games without facing break point. Querrey took a 2-0 lead in the ensuing tie-break, aided by a backhand miss from Odesnik. The third seed kept the advantage to hold triple set-point at 6-3, then sealed the 55-minute set once Odesnik struck a forehand long.
Set two marked a turnaround for Odesnik, who snagged an early break at 2-1. Querrey began to miss first serves and forehands, unable to keep his mistakes under control. The 22-year-old gave away a second break trailing 1-4, gifting a forehand well long. Triple set-point came at 5-1 for Odesnik, who closed on another wild forehand from Querrey.
Odesnik pocketed a break at 2-2 in the deciding set, as Querrey netted a forehand. The third seed recovered immediately, reaching 3-3 on a backhand mistake from his opponent. Querrey held two breakers in the seventh game, but failed to convert. The 22-year-old regrouped to collect double match-point at 6-5. Querrey completed the two-hour and 48-minute match with a big forehand, forcing Odesnik into error.
Querrey finished the afternoon with 12 aces and three of 7 break points converted.
He takes on veteran Juan Ignacio Chela for the US Men’s Clay Court Championship title on Sunday. The 30-year-old knocked out sixth-seeded compatriot Horacio Zeballos in the semifinal, 7-5, 6-2.

Thanks, Sam.

Sam was very agitated during this one, talking to himself a lot. Muttering about Odesnik, who seemed to get under his skin after that bathroom break. Today I'd expect him to be more calm.

let's just say that Querrey and Odesnik will not be going out for dinner anytime soon
disgraceful handshake

Odesnik shouldn't have even been able to be there to even think about a handshake in my opinion!!

Thank goodness for Sam Querry ... it could only have got more embarrassing for the ATP (etc.) had Odesnik made the final. ;)
