Sam Querrey attempts to win his second ATP World Tour title of the season on Sunday, set to face veteran Juan Ignacio Chela in the US Men’s Clay Court Championship final.
Third seed Sam Querrey holds a 13-8 season mark heading into his finals clash with first-time opponent Juan Ignacio Chela. The 22-year-old aims to secure a second ATP World Tour crown in 2010, adding to his previous success in Memphis (def. Isner). With a victory on Sunday, Querrey, through to his first clay-court final, raises his career tally to four titles.
The California native encountered a fairly difficult road to the title match this week. After knocking out opening-round challenger Blaz Kavcic in straight sets, Querrey held on to defeat former finalist Nicolas Massu in three, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. The World No. 25 survived a two-hour and 48-minute semifinal battle, outlasting compatriot and 2009 finalist Wayne Odesnik, 7-6(4), 1-6, 7-5. Querrey has called upon his serve all week long, having struck 28 aces entering into the final.
Veteran Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela makes his 10th appearance in an ATP World Tour final on Sunday. The 30-year-old is four-times a champion, winning all four on clay. Chela captured his last trophy at the 2007 tournament in Acapulco, where he defeated former World No. 1 Carlos Moya. The Buenos Aires native enters into Sunday’s final with a 9-9 record in 2010.
Chela earned early-round wins over Rajeev Ram and seventh-seeded countryman Eduardo Schwank. The veteran continued his run with a straight-set victory against defending champion Lleyton Hewitt, 6-4, 6-3. Chela advanced to the championship on Saturday, following his 7-5, 6-2 dismissal of fellow Argentine Horacio Zeballos.
Prediction: Querrey in three sets.
