Lleyton Hewitt heads onto the European clay for the first time since last spring's French Open after making his return this week in Houston after a second hip operation.
The 29-year-old Australian underwent the surgery during the final week of the Australian Open and took only eight weeks to return to the courts. He went down in the Houston quarter-finals to experienced Argentine Juan Chela 6-4, 6-3 in 72 minutes.
Hewitt will compete from Monday at the Monte Carlo Masters, where he lost in the first rounda year ago to now-retired Russsian Marat Safin.
The Aussie has been a rather infrequent visitor to the principality, with this edition only his fourth appearance in nine years. He won his last match at the site in 2004.
With his health now apparently back in check, one-time No. 1 and Wimbledon champion Hewitt will try and play a full European schedule leading up to the May 23 start at Roland Garros. His Monte Carlo
week is due to be followed by an appearance in Barcelona, another clay event dominated in recent editions by Rafael Nadal.
