Sam Querrey battles 2009 finalist Wayne Odesnik at the US Men’s Clay Court Championship on Saturday. The winner moves on to contest Sunday’s final against Juan Ignacio Chela or Horacio Zeballos.
Sam Querrey will take on fellow American Wayne Odesnik in the first semifinal of the afternoon on Saturday. The 22-year-old, seeded third this week, makes his third appearance in an ATP World Tour semi in 2010. Querrey reached the final four in San Jose (lost to Roddick), then followed with a title-winning run in Memphis (def. Isner). The San Francisco native began the week ranked World No. 25, and has compiled a 12-8 record this season.
Querrey dismissed earlier-round opponents Blaz Kavcic and former finalist Nicolas Massu, en route to securing a berth among the final four.
He meets 2009 Houston runner-up Wayne Odesink for their maiden clash at Tour-level on Saturday. The pair have played a trio of previous matches at Challenger-level, with all three going the way of Odesnik. Saturday afternoon’s battle marks their first encounter on clay.
The 103rd-ranked Odesnik has yet to drop a set this week, earning straight-set victories over wildcard Jerzy Janowicz, Mikhail Kukushkin and Xavier Malisse. The 24-year-old is 7-5 heading into Saturday’s match, and looks to book a second final spot in Houston. Odesnik finished runner-up to former World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt last year.
Prediction: Querrey in three sets.
