  • Wawrinka, Starace cruise into Casablanca semifinals

    4/9/10 6:37 PM | Ricky Dimon
Wawrinka, Starace cruise into Casablanca semifinals Stanislas Wawrinka and Potito Starace set up a semifinal meeting in Casablanca with routine victories on Friday. Florent Serra, the 2009 runner-up, also advances.

Stanislas Wawrinka reached the semifinals of the Grand Prix Hassan II with ease on Friday afternoon, dispatching Moroccan wild card Reda El amrani 6-3, 6-1. Wawrinka needed just one hour and two minutes to set up a clash with unseeded Potito Starace.

The 23rd-ranked Swiss dominated from start to finish against an overmatched opponent who had won only one career ATP-level match heading into this week. Wawrinka dropped a mere nine points in eight service games (none in the second set) and never faced a break point. One break in the first and three more in the second were more than enough for Casablanca's No. 1 seed.

Starace booked his place in the last four in equally overwhelming fashion. The 73rd-ranked Italian destroyed No. 4 seed Lukasz Kubot 6-1, 6-0, also in one hour and two minutes. Starace served at 88 percent for the match and never dropped serve, saving all three of the break points he face.

Kubot, who owns two runner-up finishes on clay (2009 Belgrade, 2010 Costa Do Sauipe), got broken five times and he won an atrocious four service points in the entire second set. The 42nd-ranked Pole, hopeless from the baseline against an in-form Starace, won two of 13 second-serve points over the course of the proceedings.

Eighth-seeded Florent Serra also advanced with no trouble whatsoever, upsetting No. 2 seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-2, 6-2. Serra broke serve twice in each set and saved all five of the break points he faced throughout the one hour and 15-minute match.

The 57th-ranked Frenchman, who finished runner-up last year to Juan Carlos Ferrero, fought off a break point at 5-2 in the second set before serving it out for victory. A woeful Garcia-Lopez struck no aces, double-faulted three times, and won only 40 percent of his second-serve points.
