Fernando Gonzalez reached the quarterfinal round of play at the US Men’s Clay Court Championship late Thursday, after taking out qualifier Kevin Anderson. Second seed John Isner fell to Xavier Malisse in three sets.

Top seed Fernando Gonzalez held on to defeat Kevin Anderson on Thursday, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, in an hour and 55 minutes. After committing a double fault to lose the second set, the Chilean regrouped to take a key service break at 2-2 in the decider. Gonzalez, the tournament winner in 2000, saved four of 5 break points on the evening. He improved his season record to 14-4.
Gonzalez faces 6th seed Horacio Zeballos for a place in the semifinal. The Argentine downed Dudi Sela in the round of 16, 6-3, 6-2.
Xavier Malisse def. (2) John Isner 7-6(3), 6-7(7), 7-6(3)
Xavier Malisse upset second seed John Isner Thursday afternoon, en route to booking a quarterfinal berth in two hours and 36 minutes. The American led during various points of the match, including 5-3 in the opening set. The Belgian, who withstood 14 aces from the Isner racquet, fought back to snag a 4-2 advantage in the third set tie-break.
Malisse is scheduled to take on 2009 finalist Wayne Odesnik in the quarterfinal. The American handed Mikhail Kukushkin a straight-set defeat in the round of 16, 6-1, 7-5.
