Defending champion Lleyton Hewitt rallied to a three-set victory at the US Men’s Clay Court Championship on Thursday. The veteran Australian is joined in the quarterfinal by third seed Sam Querrey, a winner in straight sets.

Third seed Sam Querrey needed just 60 minutes to dismiss round of 16 opponent Blaz Kavcic Thursday afternoon. The American, who did not lose serve during the match, converted four of 6 break point chances on the day. Querrey led 3-0 in both the first and second sets, and captured 25 of 29 first-service points. The 22-year-old improved his 2010 season record to 11-8.
Querrey will contest his quarterfinal match against former finalist Nicolas Massu. The veteran Chilean took out American qualifier Ryan Sweeting on Wednesday, 6-7(5), 7-6(3), 6-4.

Defending champion Lleyton Hewitt made a successful return to action on Thursday, rallying to knock out lucky-loser Somdev Devvarman in three sets. The 29-year-old Australian, who underwent hip surgery earlier this season, fought through five service breaks to record a victory in an hour and 54 minutes. After taking a 4-2 advantage in the deciding set, Hewitt dropped four of the next five games. Devvarman served for the match at 6-5, but failed to close. Hewitt trailed 1-2 in the tie-break, then recovered to win six consecutive points.
The defending champion moves on to face Juan Ignacio Chela in the next round. Chela downed seventh seed and fellow Argentine Eduardo Schwank early Wednesday, 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-1.
