Wayne Odesnik competes in Houston in a flurry of controversy as the American wins his first match.
ATP journeyman Wayne Odesnik won a match on clay at Houston as the player-under-a-cloud took to a court for the first time since revelations of his human growth hormone smuggling affair, with the No. 103 earning a win but failing to find sympathy from his beaten opponent.
"For me, he shouldn’t be playing at this moment," said teenaged Jerzy Janowicz of Poland. "He should be suspended.
"There are bad feelings right now. He shouldn’t play and now I’m playing with this guy. It’s tough to play with that kind of guy. I think it is unfair to do something like this.”
Under legal advice, Odesnik had nothing to say on his case, which came to light in January when customs officials discovered six vials of HGH in his luggage.
He was fined over the illegal substance.
He went on to reach the Brisbane quarter-finals that week but has won just three of nine matches since. “I’m doing the only thing I can do right now and that is focus on my tennis,” said the American.
“I’ve worked extremely hard. I’m looking forward to the clay court season. That’s where I usually excel. I’m just trying to play tennis.”
Odesnik reached the finals in Houston a year ago, where he lost to Lleyton Hewitt.
Players have generally reacted with disdain for Odesnik's alleged cheating, with Andy Roddick saying he should be banned from the game.
