The ATP World Tour shifts to clay this week, as Fernando Gonzalez and John Isner lead the field of combatants in Houston, Texas. Twenty-eight competitors will battle for top honors at the US Men’s Clay Court Championship, as play begins on Monday.
Outdoor clay-court competition is on the docket for the second week of April, as a talented group of players head to the US Men’s Clay Court Championship. The Houston tournament marks the lone clay-court event hosted in the United States.
Sitting atop the player pool is former champion and World No. 11 Fernando Gonzalez. The top-ranked Chilean returns to the US Men’s Clay Court Championship for the first time since 2001, looking for a second title. Gonzalez won the trophy in his 2000 debut (def. Massu), when the tournament was contested in Orlando, Florida. The 29-year-old begins the week with a 13-3 record, bolstered by clay-court semifinal runs in Santiago and Acapulco. Gonzalez attempts to rebound after a round of 16 loss to Robin Soderling in Miami last week.
John Isner commences his third US Men’s Clay Court Championship as the second seed. The 24-year-old American holds a 2-2 record in Houston, having reached the quarterfinal in 2009. The World No. 21 Greensboro native aims to secure a second title in 2010, adding to his early success in Auckland (def. Clement). Isner, who kicks off the week with a 15-6 mark, heads back to work after a third-round loss to former World No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero in Miami.
Memphis title-winner Sam Querrey, defending champion Lleyton Hewitt, former semifinalist Evgeny Korolev, Horacio Zeballos, Eduardo Schwank and veteran Michael Russell round out the list of remaning seeds.
Additional combatants include veteran Taylor Dent, 2006 winner Mardy Fish, Xavier Malisse, 2009 finalist Wayne Odesnik, wildcard recipient Donald Young and first-time entrant Mischa Zverev. Fish, who upset Sony Ericsson Open defending champion Andy Murray, faces a difficult opener with 2009 Houston title-winner Hewitt.

Did I read right? Lleyton is going to defend his Houston title?
How do people think he will do against Feña, who's seeded first?
