Berdych rallies to reach Sony Ericsson Open semi After trailing quarterfinal opponent Fernando Verdasco for more than an hour, Tomas Berdych regrouped to score a three-set victory late Thursday afternoon. The 16th seeded Czech is through to the final four in Miami.

Tomas Berdych extended his series lead to 6-3 over Fernando Verdasco, following his come-from-behind win in the quarterfinal. Despite early troubles with the forehand side, the 24-year-old Czech fought his way to a victory in two hours and 52 minutes, 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-4.

Thursday afternoon’s success signals a second semifinal berth for Berdych in 2010, adding to his final four finish in Brisbane (def. Roddick). The World No. 20, now 16-6 for the season, advanced to his first Masters semi since Miami 2008, where he lost a semifinal clash to Rafael Nadal.

Verdasco started the match quickly, using his forehand to force a break-point error from Berdych at 2-2. The Czech earned a chance to recover immediately, but failed to convert. The Spaniard held serve for the remainder of the set, collecting double set-point at 5-4. An unreturned serve sealed the 6-4 set for the 10th seed, who closed in 48 minutes of play.

A forehand up the line gave Verdasco a break advantage in the second set. The Spaniard could not hold the lead, however, as a costly backhand error leveled the match at 3-3. Two additional break points came for Verdasco in the seventh game, neither with success.

Berdych gained a 5-2 edge in the second-set tie-break, aided by a slice backhand error an a missed forehand volley from Verdasco. The Czech pocketed triple set-point at 6-3, finishing with an unreturnable serve on his third opportunity.

After missing break point at 1-1 in the decider, Berdych took double break-point in the seventh game. Solid defense from the 24-year-old gave him an opening, as he stole the break with a cross-court backhand winner. Berdych reached match point at 5-4, completing the afternoon with a well-timed, wide serve and forehand winner combination.

The 16th seed will take on either 5th seed Robin Soderling or 13th seed Mikhail Youzhny in the semifinal. Berdych holds a 2-4 record against the Swede and trails the Russian 4-6.

Congrats Berdych; at least he back up his win against Fed by winning another match. He shows some mental toughness and self belief here to come from one set down and goes on to win the match. Come on Berdych, back up your two wins with another over Soderling please!

Three of the four semi finalists here in Miami were also the semifinalists at IW last week - Rafa, Roddick & Soderling; that shows how good and consistent these three guys are. Also, Berdych has done well to reach the semi here, he was stopped by Rafa at the QF in IW. He has also showed his consistency and good performance. I hope to see a Rafa/Berdych final with Rafa winning, so that Rafa will move closer to the no.2 position and Berdych will most likely be in the top 15.

It will be interesting to see how far Berdych can take it. Soderling has been very solid. In a way I would like to see Berdych take it, after ousting Roger, but Ultimately to see Nadal against Soderling (now, at this tournament) would (at least form me), create an interesting dual dynamic.

yes. i thought that berdych would not be able to get past tabasco, who seemed to cruise in the first set, he seemed to get very annoyed with himself and i think it was at this point that he lost his way. was a shame, because there were some really brilliant shot making, but he choked.

berdych seems to be realising the talents that experts have been talking about for almost 2 years now.

good luck to both players.

I think that Berdych will beat the Sod.

But wouldn't it be great to see RN vs RS in the final? No chance My Guy would leave court without that title!

nadline it would not surprise me "at all" if Berdych wins this tournament. He is playing extremely well. *looks like* his time has come to WIN this time around! Berdych, yes, I feel Berdych will take Roddick, but it won't be easy...

it is real enjoyment watching Berdych's fh.62 62 against Sod who recently beat Murray!
