  • Roddick says Murray should suck it up for Britain

    3/29/10 5:59 PM | Johan Lindahl
Roddick says Murray should suck it up for Britain It's "do as I say, not as I do" for Andy Roddick, a 2010 Davis Cup non-participant who has advised Andy Murray to suck it up and play the event for Britain again.

Roddick joined Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in missing first-round Davis play, with the US crashing badly to defeat in Serbia this month.

Britain is in dire straits, with a July date against Turkey to try and stay clear of the lowest of all European zones in the worldwide competition.

Murray has not been a starter this season, announcing that he is working on his ATP. But without the No. 3, the nation has no player of note and will face a fight even against the Turks on grass in Eastbourne.

“I think the most important thing for your team is to have your guy playing right now. That's the No. 1 priority,” Roddick told a British questioner at the Miami Masters - where Murray took an opening round exit after winning the event a year ago.

Britain is embroiled in soul-searching over the choice of a Davis Cup captain to replace disgraced John Lloyd. Murray doesn't want Greg Rusedski in the post, a former player with whom the Scot has never had the best relations.

"Does Murray need to like the captain?” asked Roddick. “Yes, he probably needs to like the captain. The No. 1 priority is you need Murray to play, and so he has to like the captain."

Wow - this article is an exercise in misinformation, misdirection & irresponsible sensationalistic reporting. Didn't realize this site was The National Enquirer of tennis. Let's start with the headline: Roddick says Murray should suck it up for Britain - read the interview. Nowhere, at no time does Roddick say this. He says: "I think the most important thing for your team is to have your guy playing right now. That's the No. 1 priority." Notice he says "your team" ie: UK. This is not rocket science here: if the UK is sincere about winning, then they need to convince Murray to play and play in the first round. Period.

As for the first sentence of this "article": "It's "do as I say, not as I do" for Andy Roddick, a 2010 Davis Cup non-participant who has advised Andy Murray to suck it up and play the event for Britain again." I can't begin to count the ways this statement is an example gross distortion & misinformation. First, Roddick has played DC for the US every year approx 8 years for a total of 42 DC matches - how many years has Murray played for the UK Davis Cup team? Or should I ask how many matches? If Murray were to "do as (Roddick) does", he should play DC for Britain until he retires & still wouldn't have 42 matches in. Shame on you for distorting facts & insinuating that Roddick doesn't play DC so he shouldn't comment. Obviously the British press asked him the question because of his long, well-known (except by you) commitment to DC. And where the hell is he quoted as telling Murray to "suck it up"?

Personally, I understand Murray's reluctance to commit to DC & focus on his singles career, but gee whiz Muzza, all the other pros would like to do that as well. If Novak Djokovic can "suck it up" as you put it & carry the load for Serbia by playing for his country, Murray can too. Either that or he needs to shut up and get out of the debate, particularly the captain debate. As for you Johan Lindahl, you need to learn the difference between reporting & fiction.

the heading doesn't seem to reflect what roddick actually says - at least based on this article. i haven't read the actually interview but.....naughty naughty! DC is always disruptive to the already tight schedule especially for the top players so if muzz thinks it's better for him to not play DC since they can't get their act together than i think he's made the right decision. what muzz CAN get from roddick perhaps is how he bounced back from his wimb loss (that is, if muzz is still suffering from ao loss). good on ya muzz!! why should you bail out GB if they can't get their act together. they seem to have forgotten he played at the expense of an injury last time and made it worst. and knowing roddick, that last sentence was probably tongue in cheek anyway...

Agree with Tenisbebe - except that Murray has always played DC for his country, apart from when injured (in fact he played against Poland last year and agravated an injury which caused him to miss Shanghai) or sick...

He was the youngest ever to have played for the national team when he first played in 2005, the month before he became a pro.

This year he has had a re-think, and not much wonder, the last time he played, it cost him dearly - and after all one man, no matter how good, does not a team make.....

Lloyd hasn't been particularly pleasant to Andy either. On one occasion he said something like the only excuse he'd accept for Andy not to play was if Andy was on crutches. That and dropping Jamie for no very good reason, no wonder the Murrays don't like him.
