  • Gonzalez, Youzhny, Monaco roll into round three

    3/28/10 1:02 AM | Ricky Dimon
Gonzalez, Youzhny, Monaco roll into round three Fernando Gonzalez cruises past Yen-Hsun Lu in straight sets on Saturday in Miami. Gonzalez is joined in the third round by Mikhail Youzhny and Juan Monaco, who also looked good in straight-set victories.

    (9) Fernando Gonzalez d. (Q) Yen-Hsun Lu 6-4, 6-4

After missing Indian Wells to help in Chile's earthquake relief effort, Gonzalez returned in style on Saturday at the Sony Ericsson Open by dismissing Lu in one hour and 17 minutes. Lu managed to make the match relatively competitive, but Gonzalez saved all four break points he faced in set one to consolidate his lone scalp of Lu's serve. The 11th-ranked Chilean surrendered his serve once in the second frame of play, but he made up for it with stellar baseline play while also capitalizing on a poor first-service percentage from Lu. Gonzalez finished with 10 aces and 27 of 31 first-serve points won on his way to a third-round showdown with Juan Monaco.

    (13) Mikhail Youzhny d. (Q) Santiago Giraldo 6-0, 6-1

Giraldo did well for himself in Miami by qualifying for the main draw and defeating Marcos Daniel in the first round, but the Colombian ran into a different level of tennis on Saturday. Youzhny jumped all over Giraldo right from the start and allowed the underdog a mere one game over 50 minutes. The 15th-ranked Russian showcased remarkable consistency from the back of the court and a rock-solid one-handed backhand while sending a message early and often that Giraldo was never going to have a chance. Next up for Youzhny is No. 19 seed Stanislas Wawrinka.

    (22) Juan Monaco d. (Q) Marsel Ilhan 6-2, 7-5

Like Giraldo, Ilhan enjoyed a solid week by qualifying for the main draw and advancing to round two (beat Pablo Cuevas on Thursday). While the Turk's run ended at the hands of Monaco, he at least put up a commendable fight. Ilhan fought back from a set and a break down, but Monaco was simply too good and too fast at the back of the court. The 26th-ranked Argentine regained the momentum with a break at 5-5 before serving out the proceedings in routine fashion. Monaco won 71 percent of his first-serve points and abused Ilhan's second serve by winning 65 percent of those points.
