David Nalbandian kicks off his Miami campaign with an easy win over Lukasz Kubot. Taylor Dent also advances and will now do battle against Rafael Nadal.
(WC) David Nalbandian d. Lukasz Kubot 6-3, 6-2
Nalbandian raced through Kubot in just one hour and one minute on Wednesday evening in first-round action at the Sony Ericsson Open. The story of the match was Nalbandian's ability to take advantage of the Koubek second serve, as the 28-year-old Argentine won 13 of 16 second-serve return points. Nalbandian broke serve a total of four times (he converted four of five chances) so it mattered little that he donated his own serve once in the opening set. Next up for the world No. 161 is 30th-seeded Viktor Troicki, who destroyed Nalbandian last year in Miami.
Taylor Dent d. (Q) Rainer Schuettler 6-1, 6-4
Schuettler won't get another shot at Rafael Nadal after going down listlessly to Dent after only one hour and one minute of play on Wednesday afternoon. The 33-year-old German, who fell to Nadal in Indian Wells, strick just one ace, double-faulted three times, and saved none of the three break points he faced. Dent, on the other hand, fought off all four of his opponent's break chances. The 83rd-ranked American fired seven aces and won 24 of 29 first-serve points as he powered his way into a second-round clash with the world No. 4.
Florian Mayer d. Marco Chiudinelli 7-6(2), 1-6, 6-2
Coming off a Challenger title in Sunrise, Florida, Mayer kept up his fine form on Wednesday but he needed two hours and 16 minutes to get past Chiudinelli. Mayer went on a bit of a mental walkabout after dominating the first-set tiebreaker, but he bounced back convincingly in set three. The 49th-ranked German broke serve a whopping three times in the final frame of play and he closed out the proceedings with a solid service hold at 5-2. Mayer will take on No. 28 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber on Friday for a spot in the third round.
