  • Murray wants to keep Rusedski out of Davis Cup coaching job

    3/19/10 8:39 PM | Johan Lindahl
Murray wants to keep Rusedski out of Davis Cup coaching job Andy Murray is looking like the deciding factor in the choice of a new Davis Cup coach for Britain, with the world No. 4 Scot determined not to have a former playing great on the bench as boss.

While Murray might welcome the appointment of former mentor Tim Henman, that's not going to happen, with the four-time Wimbledon semi-finalist much happier with improving his golf game in retirement and serving on the Wimbledon committee.

One man Murray wants out of the mix is Henman's contemporary "Grinning" Greg Rusedski, the Canadian who has put his hand up for the post made available when John Lloyd quit after five straight Davis Cup defeats.

Murray has no trouble making his position on the choice clear:

"The one problem I’ve had with Davis Cup is that people mentioned as captains are ones who are either famous or the best players from a previous generation.

"That’s not necessarily the way they do it in every country and I don’t think it’s the only way it can work. So, from my side, it might be nice to try something different."

“With what's been going on with British tennis, I think it's important to make a statement with the next captain."

"There are a lot of things that go into being a Davis Cup captain and you don't know how people are going to deal with certain situations, being in front of the press, with a lot of pressure, so you've got to weigh all of those things up."

Murray is particularly fearful of the chatty Rusedski "whispering" into his ear on the bench.

"I’m only 22 and have only been at the top of the game for a short while but I already know more about tennis, and certainly more about my game, than Greg Rusedski,” Murray has said.

British tennis is one loss away from relegation into the lowest of the Davis Cup groupings. The rudderless nation must beat Turkey in July on grass to survive.

Andy, what an uppity thing you are. You don't even play Davis Cup.

pennster: sorry but it's the truth. Andy says it like it is and that's why we love him! Actually he said he didn't want Greg "yakking" in his ear, and who can blame him?

Just stay out of it, muzz. By throwing your oar in every week your're morally obliging yourself to play DC yourself - and DC will just be a pointless drain on your energies until such time as you are no longer the only male tennis player in Britain.

Who does he think he is? If you're going to have an opinion about the matter, at least play Davis Cup. Seriously.

Rusedski actively supported and promoted Murraymania thingy ....
