Andy Roddick beats Thiemo de Bakker in straight sets on Tuesday in Indian Wells. Roddick is joined in the fourth round by Tommy Robredo, who crushed Dudi Sela.
Andy Roddick moved into the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open on Tuesday night, dismissing Thiemo de Bakker 6-3, 6-4. The seventh-seeded American needed just one hour and 15 minutes to book a meeting with Jurgen Melzer.
Roddick fired 10 aces and double-faulted only once as he held all 10 of his service games. After breaking de Bakker midway through set one, Roddick faced his opponent's lone break chance of the match and he erased it with an ace out wide.
Although de Bakker served well (15 aces, no double-faults) to keep himself relatively close, the 21-year-old Dutchman often saw his baseline game break down at the end of any extended rally. That allowed Roddick to break once in each set, and that was all the world No. 8 needed.
Tommy Robredo joined Roddick in the fourth round and set up a potential showdown with world No. 1 Roger Federer. Robredo, who had never defeated Dudi Sela in three previous tries, destroyed the 5'9'' Israeli 6-3, 6-0 in one hour and eight minutes.
After serving out the first set at 5-3, Robredo won twice as many points as Sela during the second frame of play. The 23rd-ranked Spaniard finished with four aces and one double-fault while converting an impressive five of seven break-point opportunities.
Robredo, 0-9 lifetime against Federer, will get a 10th shot at him if Indian Wells' top seed can get past Marcos Baghdatis on Tuesday night.
