  • Nadal to chuck his checks to bury fashion faux-pas

    3/16/10 8:41 PM | Johan Lindahl
Nadal to chuck his checks to bury fashion faux-pas Rafael Nadal is counting the days until his current Nike-look of brown, orange and gray diamond-checked tennis shorts are sent to the back of the closet.

The Spaniard, whose outfit makes him look like a pensioner on a golf courses, is quietly cautious in his description of the clothing which he now plans to ditch for the start of the Miami Masters next week.

"It‘s different, more different than usual," said the the defending champion at this week's Indian Wells Masters. "It's a little bit fashion(able) for me, I think. Is too much, a little bit, for me, but it‘s going to be (worn) for this tournament."

While Nadal was too good-mannered to give the look the thrashing it deserves, the world No. 3 said:

Looking ahead to the next event, he added: "I'll change everything for Miami."

The Spaniard said that he pays only minimal attention to his match clothing and has no superstition about the pink shirt he was given for last year‘s French Open.

Of course, 2009 was the only time the king of clay ever suffered a loss at Roland Garros, going down to Robin Soderling in the fourth round.

"I‘m not superstitious," he said. "The colour of the shirt doesn‘t affect anything of the game."

He's not superstitious? Then why does he arrange the water bottles? Does anybody want to take a bet that he will wear a pink shirt at RG this year? Anyone?

hahahaha. awww, bless him for not being mean about it. glad he's gonna ditch the shorts though :D

Sib69 , 3/16/10 9:50 PM

Maybe he means he's not superstitious about his clothes. :)
I dont think that the pink shirt jinxed Rafa. He played poorly; Soderling played well. The pink shirt was really nice on his tanned skin, IMO. I think he looks good in bright colors such as pink, bright blue, turquoise, orange, and yellow.

I think he should ditch the brown criss-cross plaid, but the white ones really weren't that bad, once I saw them on him. The shirts with the horizontal stripes look good on him, too. Those brown shorts are just yuck, however.

chr18, he won't wear pink at RG this year simply because that is so last year, not because he is superstitious. And about the bottles, he just likes things in order, and the bottles make no difference to his results, because they were blown over during his match with Schuts, and he still won.

I hope Nike doesn't give him polka dots next.

I love what RN wears ... really love those shorts ... I think they're great.
But ch18 ha ha I bet he doesn't wear pink at RG.

As far as the pink, any Rafa fan will tell you that he has said before that he likes bright colors because they remind him of home. For him to actually say that the shorts were "too much" for him, is as close to him saying he doesn't like them as you're going to get--lol.

Hey fan4t: long time no see! gr8 2 have u back! Hope you've been baking....

deuce , 3/16/10 11:07 PM

Hey deuce!! Thanks for the wb! Not been baking alot in the last 6 months but always ready to start when the couches come out--lol.

fan4tennis , 3/16/10 11:38 PM

Polka dots? Crikey, carrie, you don't suppose he's going to enter the Tour de France as well? The locals would never stand for it, they're so sick of him winning RG as it is.

f4t, don't you think it's all change on here since you "left behind the lights of 14th Street"?

gorafago , 3/16/10 11:41 PM

green at Roland Garros

RickyDimon , 3/16/10 11:45 PM

I wonder who'se idea it was to employ Stevie Wonder as fashion consultant in the first place ?

lwalters , 3/16/10 11:46 PM

gorafago....not sure what you mean about the 14th Street comment but I will say not much has changed in the 6 months I was gone. I read alot of the threads to catch up before my first post back. Deuce was always one of the fairest and sanest posters and I look forward to baking for her and the crew again--lol!

fan4tennis , 3/16/10 11:49 PM

For the record I'm not superstitious about the clothes or the water bottles. Like I've said before : Nike must be playing a joke on him because I don't see any other players wearing their clothes with that kind of ensemble. He should ask for more money if that continues.

chr18 , 3/16/10 11:50 PM

Ricky D thanks for the fashion update ... nice to know you care about such things.

smr , 3/17/10 12:11 AM

As a RAFAN, I didn't care about these shorts on Rafa as well. I think they're ugly. Can't wait for the new (old) look. Bring back the sleeveless shirt and long shorts! Vamos!!!

jayhu , 3/17/10 6:44 AM

I was aghast when I first saw these brown shorts. But oddly enough, I'm getting used to them and they didn't distract me nearly as much in the Ancic match as they did when he first wore them. LOL that he can't wait to see the back of them though!

As an side, I liked the pink on him last year! I think he pulls off bright colours well.

Zooni , 3/17/10 7:54 AM

chr18, you've got it wrong. Nike uses Rafa to promote the extraordinary because he looks good in whatever he wears. I loved the pink at RG, he just looked fab. Other players have worn pink, but never made an impact, I can't even name one right now. Russell wore sleeveless in his match with Murray yesterday, did he make an impact.....errr No.

Rafa radiates elegance and bright colours suit him. He says that men wear bright colours in Spain, and it's no big deal there.

carrie , 3/17/10 9:43 AM

carrie,
Do you know anybody who would buy those brown shorts? I don't. :)

P.S. Not even if Ivanovic wore them

chr18 , 3/17/10 12:37 PM

i think i somwhere saw his outfit for RG, it was kind of good. nadal is not supertitious, he likes things to be in order and follows a routine strictly, thats it.

vamosrafa , 3/17/10 2:00 PM

Please don't talk about the sleeveless look anymore. With his short hair and adult look now, he won't look the same as in the past with the sleeveless. Please just leave the sleeveless look intact with all the good old memories of the wild boy from Mallorca; he has grown up and is no longer the sweet and innocent home town boy. Let him wears whatever he likes to wear and lives the life he likes to live. He need not conform to his fans expectations. After all, we should be concentrating on his tennis game, the rest doesn't matter too much (at least to me).

f4t:

"I went away from the lights of 14th street, into my own personal haze. But now that I'm back in the lights of 14th street, tomorrow will be brighter than the good old days."

From the title number in stage musical Hello Dolly (ask your grandmother). Her way of saying she'd been away too long but from now on things are gonna be bettah than evah!

I refer of course not only to you but to Rafa reborn.

And so much the bettah if Rafa ditches those britches for good, say I.

gorafago , 3/17/10 3:17 PM

Thanks for the explanation gora! I have seen several musicals but not that one and I am terrible when it comes to remembering quotes from movies or musicals--lol.

I, too, am hoping Rafa does well. I am not one for predicting outcomes. I just hope he plays well and knowing him, I know he will always try his best and that is enough for me, win or lose!

fan4tennis , 3/17/10 3:50 PM

fan4t: Thanks for the nice compliments! Yes, I do try to keep my cool, but it sure ain't easy sometimes.....
gorafago: " time he ditches those britches"- brilliant!
