Agassi back-pedals after "tightwad" taunt Andre Agassi is fast back-pedalling on his taunts at "tightwad" Pete Sampras during last Friday's Hit for Haiti 2 fund-raiser doubles match at the Indian Wells Masters.

The Las Vegas kid told ESPN that he was sorry for his outburst, which drew the ire of Sampras and likely caused the former Grand Slam champion to serve a ball at his rival as the charity appearance turned ugly.

Agassi was paired on court with Rafael Nadal in doubles while Sampras was playing with Roger Federer.

"It was out of line," Agassi told the ESPN website. "It was inappropriate. The night was on fire. We were all having fun. I was trying to be comedic.

"I only had a split second to make a decision. I went for it and it fell flat. I was trying to get past it, but Pete didn't really let me get past it. He didn't really roll with it. I've texted Pete to ask him if I can apologise in person."

Agassi had related in his autumn autobiography a story of how he once heard his fellow multimillionaire Sampras had tipped a Palm Springs parking attendant $1.

Agassi repeated a version of the gag on court during match play while wearing a head mic during the exho. "The joke fell flat and I'm sorry", he added. "My hope was that the night was still enjoyable."
