Roger Federer admits he felt uncomfortable as former greats Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras engaged in an on-court slanging session during last week's Hit for Haiti 2 at the Indian Wells Masters.
But the always diplomatic Swiss refused to dwell on the verbal jousting which occurred during the charity hit with the players wearing head mics which picked up their every comment.
Agassi and Sampras, never the best of mates anyway, got stuck into it on opposite sides of the court, with Sampras unleashing body serves at Agassi after his Las Vegas rival joked about the poor tipping habits of the Californian.
"There was definitely an awkward moment, a bit of a heated moment," Federer said. "It's a bit unfortunate, but that stuff kind of happens. It's a pity if that's what grabs the limelight and not the event itself."
The charity hit - a copy of one originally organised by Federer on short notice the day before the Australian Open - raised in excess of one million dollars for earthquake stricken Haiti.
Federer remains puzzled by the exchange between the seniors. "I don't think it was that crazy bad, but it was a bit awkward because you didn't know. Was it just fun, was it not fun? What was it, you know?
"I thought maybe we have to give both guys like a timeout or something," said the father of eight-month-old twin girls.

Thanks for your post, tennislover. Exactly what I was saying the other day - Andre will never make a new career in stand-up.
It is interesting to see the reactions of the posters to the incident. To my amazement, a few people even read it as a case of "shame on Sampras"! I guess if you can't stand Pete, it's near-impossible to be objective about it by saying in all truth that Andre was out of line - which he most certainly was.
It seems to me, re-living the incident on net links, that Pete handled it pretty well. In the first place, he merely fell back on the standard send-up approach beloved of tennis stars - imitate your opponent's playing style. [And he nailed him pretty neatly, might I add.] Wow. Just look at what he got in return - a revealing glimpse into the Agassi mind-set.
chr18, you are absolutely right about the shamelss plug for Agassi's book. [Now who's concerned with money, eh?] The tipping incident was mentioned there, too, and carried in media reporting at the time of its publication. So what exactly is the deal with Andre - did he see Pete coming up short on one lousy occasion and latch on to this in an entirely disproportionate way? That seems grossly unfair. We all have awkward moments (and traits) in life and are lucky that the press-hounds aren't on our case. Pete must wonder who needs paparazzi when he Andre Agassi to treat his long-time colleague in such a disgusting fashion.
Agassi has now gloated very publicly about the tipping episode on more than one occasion himself. What more damage does he want to do? In my opinion he is only damaging himself.
You know, it makes me wonder if Pete didn't give the valet a bigger tip. [I know that US bills all look the same.] And I haven't heard any angry valet come forward to try and make a buck out of confirming the truth of it all. At this point I also begin to wonder if there ever really was a drug-using "Slim" in the Agassi entourage. We certainly haven't seen "Slim" coming forward or being tracked down these past few months, now have we?

its not sampras fault....agassi he was total jerk in this charity match...he served to roger legs and talk like a kid....and i laughed when he said i like the ball to pounce in the court not go to my head....he served to federer body even before sampras did...whats wronge with him...its strange that they invited him to this match after his coke story
he didnt have to make it personal between him and sampras....and before that in his book he insulted sampras....this whole problem its because of agassi...sampras was so mature and diplomatic...

Agassi was always the problem in this rivalry. The media always poked fun at Pete that he was boring and whatever but it's because he refused to stoop to Agassi's level and gave the media no fodder to play with. I hope steffy gave him a dressing down. Dumbass organisers. They should have invited Andre and Tiger.
remi , 3/16/10 5:29 PM
Roger and Rafa have got it right, they leave all the back-biting and mud slinging to their fans. Lol
carrie , 3/16/10 5:42 PM
haha, watched the video clip, embarassing!
rfzr , 3/16/10 6:21 PM
Agassi was just mad that the organizers insulted him by pairing him up with nadal of all people.
Agassi has publicly said that nadal is a FREAK and has no respect for his game.
So pairing them like this as if they are equals must have irritated him.. I think it was just lack of respect from organizers! Agassi deserved better!
GoMuzza , 3/16/10 6:35 PM
GoMuzza what is the matter that you are so mad on rafa? Has he done smth to you?
It's really funny to read your comments... And what players are better nowadays if not rafa and roger? agassi deserved smb better than rafa... it makes non sense., or the pair of andre should have been rodney laver? :D :D
linuta , 3/16/10 6:55 PM
Golummuzza is just another in loved girl...and rejected... from Rafa...so you can understand his spiritual pain...
zare , 3/16/10 7:31 PM
Who exactly did Agassi deserve then, GoMuzza? Surely not your no-slams darling...?
gorafago , 3/16/10 7:35 PM
Everybody felt like leaving them two alone
but at least Agassi apologized: according to yahoo sportOn Monday, Agassi talked to ESPN.com's Rick Reilly and offered an apology:
"It was out of line. It was inappropriate. The night was on fire. We were all having fun. I was trying to be comedic. I only had a split second to make a decision. I went for it and it fell flat. I was trying to get past it, but Pete didn't really let me get past it. He didn't really roll with it. I've texted Pete to ask him if I can apologize in person.
"The joke fell flat and I'm sorry. My hope was that the night was still enjoyable. My whole book is about living and learning, and I guess you never stop."
That's a decent apology, even though there was no need to continue taking subtle jabs at Sampras in it.
