  • Davydenko, Verdasco, Isner through to third round

    3/14/10 5:20 AM | Kelli DeMario
Davydenko, Verdasco, Isner through to third round Tournament seeds Nikolay Davydenko, Fernando Verdasco and John Isner all moved through to the third round of the BNP Paribas Open on Saturday without dropping a set.

    (5) Nikolay Davydenko def. Ernests Gulbis 6-4, 6-4

Fifth seed Nikolay Davydenko extended his series lead to 3-0 over Delray Beach title-winner Ernests Gulbis Saturday afternoon. The Russian earned a 6-4, 6-4 second-round victory, having surrendered only one of 10 service games. Davydenko led after breaking serve at 2-2 in the opener, aided by an errant backhand from Gulbis. The 28-year-old, who received treatment to address a thigh issue, kept the momentum in set two. Davydenko served for the match at 5-2, but a resurgent Gulbis saved two match points en route to earning a service break. Another match point at 5-4 capped off the victory for Davydenko in 94 minutes.

Davydenko advances to meet 29th seed Viktor Troicki for a place in the round of 16. The Serb reached round three after opponent Pablo Cuevas retired at 0-1 in the first set.

    (10) Fernando Verdasco def. (Q) Ramon Delgado 6-4, 6-1

Fernando Verdasco defeated qualifier Ramon Delgado in straight sets on Saturday, with five of 9 break points converted. The Spaniard took the 50-minute opener as the Uruguayan missed a routine forehand on set point. Verdasco used the power of his forehand to build a 5-1 double-break lead in set two. The Spaniard collected three match points in short order, ending the 89-minute encounter as Delgado shanked a return of serve.

Verdasco faces 19th seed Tomas Berdych in round three. The Czech struck 13 aces en route to notching a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 hard-fought victory over Frenchman Florent Serra on Saturday.

    (15) John Isner def. (Q) Kevin Anderson 6-3, 7-5

Fifteenth seed John Isner made quick work of qualifier Kevin Anderson Saturday evening, posting a 6-3, 7-5 victory without facing break point. The 24-year-old American held 11 of 11 service games and captured 33 of 39 first-service points. Isner snagged one break of the Anderson serve per set, including a key break at 5-5 in set two. The Greensboro native finished the match with an unreturnable serve, closing at the 70-minute mark.

Isner will battle 17th-seeded countryman Sam Querrey in the next round. Querrey downed Jeremy Chardy of France in 55 minutes late Saturday, 6-3, 6-4.

I just heard that Davy will be out 3 months with a broken wrist. He beat Ernie yesterday with a broken wrist. That dude is tough. I loved that match because they both were taking the ball so early and hitting it so hard it looked like a table tennis match.

nice one, Gulbis

hand the French to Nadal

So Davy is out? He really played well yesterday with all those injuries. Although, Gulbis made far too many unforced errors...

RD,
So you thought Davy had a chance to win the FO??????????? Based on............Besides, Ernie didn't break Davy's wrist.

chr18 , 3/14/10 11:33 PM

um, actually chr18, davys only our for four weeks. http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/03/15/2845726.htm

Sounds like Davy broke it at Rotterdam (while playing against Soderling) ... but was misdiagnosed until now.
Perhaps Ricky was being sarcastic chr18.

tj,
I just repeated what was said on tennis channel. ESPN said he would have a cast on his left wrist for 4 weeks. Since he has a two-handed backhand I doubt he'll come back right after having the cast removed.

smr,
RD was being sarcastic but the questions remains why? If Davy is out of FO it doesn't hand anything to Nadal. The top contenders are Fed, Djoker and del Potro
IMO. Besides RD knows he wants Nadal to win another FO anyway.

Actually Davy is also one of the top contenders at the FO. He had reached two semifinals at the FO (07 & 08), lost to Fed on both occasions. He had also reached the Rome semifinal in 2007 and ran Nadal close in that match, reached the Monte Carlo semifinal in 2008(lost to Nadal). His last year's clay court results weren't great because he just came back from his foot injury. In fact if he were to face Delpo on clay, I'll favor him over Delpo. He may even beat Nole on clay, only Fed and Nadal are almost always sure to beat him on clay.

Davy lost to Fed at the FO semi in 07, and lost to Puerta at the FO semi in 05. Apology for the error in my above post.
