Simon’s struggles continue in the desert as he falls 7-5, 6-4
Argentinean Brian Dabul’s steady play and smart tactics helped him defeat world #21 Gilles Simon 7-5, 6-4. Taking notice of Simon’s taped left hand, Dabul gave a steady diet of backhands to the Frenchman. Through qualifying and the main draw, he has yet to concede a set.
The match started off well for Simon as he won the opening two points with forehand winners, before taking the game with ease. First serves would not come easy though as he served a paltry 44% first serve percentage for the match. Lacking consistency on the serve spread quickly to the rest of Simon’s game though. Unforced errors, particularly from the backhand side doomed the Frenchman. The nagging hand injury only added to his struggles.
At a mere 5’7”, Dabul was unable to get many free points on serve, but he continuously kept the ball deep to Simon’s backhand. He would occasionally keep Simon honest by going to the forehand side, but definitely preferred the free points he was amassing on Simon’s backhand. Dabul continuously took it to his opponent and won a surprising 78% of the points on his first serve.
With Simon returning poorly and clearly struggling with his backhand, the match ended in a mere hour and thirty one minutes. Up next for Dabul is the winner of Ivan Ljubicic and Ryan Harrison.
