American James Blake and Nicolas Almagro from Spain moved into the second round with easy straight set wins on Friday.
James Blake def. Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-3, 6-2
James Blake was forced to compete in the opening round of Indian Wells. The once-perennial top 20 is now ranked outside the top 50 and nowhere near getting the first round bye that the top 32 seeds enjoy. His first round match was not much of a challenge, however. Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain never earned a single break point on Blake in the 55 minute rout on center court. The win sets up a second round encounter against another Spaniard – David Ferrer, the No. 13 seed.
Nicolas Almagro def. Mischa Zverev 6-3, 6-2
Nicolas Almagro’s path to the second round was slightly more complicated than Blake’s. The Spaniard’s scoreline was the same and he took just over an hour to defeat Germany’s Mischa Zverev. The only blip on Almagro’s radar was that he surrendered a service break in the second set. Fortunately for the Spaniard, Zverev had a weak service day. The German was broken 3 times and Almagro skated easily into the second round. Waiting for him there is the towering Croat Ivo Karlovic with his rocket serve.
