Andy Murray is in the top half of the draw with Roger Federer, but he will have to get past some tough opponents before a possible meeting in the semis.
Great Britain’s Andy Murray has had an eventful couple of weeks since his early exit at the event in Dubai. After losing in the second round to Janko Tipsarevic, the Scot revealed in a press conference that he was experimenting with his shots. The comments rankled Dubai tournament officials, who interpreted the statement as a confession that the world No. 4 was not trying his hardest.
Murray will be looking to put the controversy behind him – he’ll need to in order to make it through his section of the draw. The Scot is looking at a possible round of 16 showdown with Spaniard David Ferrer and if he gets past Ferrer, he may have to face either hard-hitting Spaniard Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or the equally difficult Swede Robin Soderling.
Murray is an excellent hard court player, recent performance in Dubai notwithstanding. He is certainly capable of beating any of the opponents in his section. The big question is whether he will be able to get past the disappointment of having lost the Australian Open final in straight sets to Roger Federer. The loss appeared to throw the Scot off his stride quite considerably.
The Scot is certainly the favored player to come through this section, but an upset at the hands of Tsonga or Ferrer would certainly not be hugely shocking.
