  • Nadal faces difficult road to defend Indian Wells title

    3/11/10 3:14 AM | Kelli DeMario
Nadal faces difficult road to defend Indian Wells title Rafael Nadal kicks off his 2010 Indian Wells title defense this week, opening against a qualifier in the second round. The World No. 3 faces a potential quarterfinal meeting with Nikolay Davydenko or Fernando Verdasco.

Rafael Nadal makes his long-awaited ATP World Tour return at the BNP Paribas Open, looking to bounce back after knee pain kept him away from tennis for more than six weeks. The 23-year-old is scheduled to see action for the first time since his quarterfinal-round retirement to Australian Open finalist Andy Murray. Nadal will meet either Brazilian Thiago Alves or veteran Rainer Schuettler of Germany in the second round.

The Spaniard’s bid for a third Indian Wells crown may prove to be a difficult one, with either 15th seed American John Isner or 17th seed Sam Querrey as a likely opponent in the round of 16. Additional seeded players lurking in Nadal’s quarter include Nikolay Davydenko, Fernando Verdasco, Tomas Berdych, Viktor Troicki and Julien Benneteau. Nadal’s closest seed is the No. 31 veteran Frenchman, whom Nadal would battle in round three.

Particularly troublesome for Nadal, who holds a 8-2 season record heading into his sixth BNP Paribas Open, is a possible encounter against fifth seed Nikolay Davydenko. The two contested the Doha final in January, where the Russian rallied to victory after dropping the opening set 0-6. The Russian, set for a presumable second-round clash with 2010 Delray Beach winner Ernests Gulbis, leads Nadal 5-4 in the head-to-head series, having captured four of their last five matches. The Spaniard has not earned a hard-court victory over Davydenko since the 2006 Tennis Masters Cup.

A Nadal-Davydenko showdown is by no means a guarantee, as the Russian could square off against 10th seed and recent San Jose champion Fernando Verdasco. Although Davydenko has a clear edge in the series, the 26-year-old Spanish hard-court threat pushed the Russian to the wall at the 2010 Australian Open, building a two-set lead before succumbing in five.

i think rafa can make it to the semis atleast.....after that its all about his confidence and practice that will decide his fate.......DO WELL RAFA

VAMOS!!!!!!!

vrael , 3/11/10 7:21 AM

Anyone would think that Rafa is not capable of beating anyone.

Nadal H2H against:

Verdasco 9:0
Davydenko 4:5
Berdych 6:3 The last time Berdych beat Rafa was in 2006, since 2007 Rafa has beaten him 5 times in a row.

Why is Nadal always being painted as the underdog, no matter who he is playing.

Vamos!

carrie , 3/11/10 9:15 AM

Carrie, I must say I do agree with you - and despite that he has proved them wrong on many occasions by winning 36 titles in his young career, including 6 Grand Slams, 15 Masters Shields! Bet against Nadal at your peril I would say!

Sec1SupaLaura , 3/11/10 10:46 AM

maybe because he didnt beat a top 10 player in a while now in an offecial match

tennislover , 3/11/10 11:15 AM

... or because Camp Rafa frequently paints my man as the underdog.

It's all good fun, carrie - they ain't above mind games. Why should Roger have it all his own way? Besides, it doesn't mean our Rafa ain't humble. I'm sure he is, no matter what changes he goes through. What a well-grounded young man he is!

Wit his mojo back post-DC finals and Doha, just watch him go now.

Tomorrow belongs to Rafalito!

VAMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

gorafago , 3/11/10 2:29 PM

Who says Nadal has not beaten a top 10 player in a while, he's beaten Soderling and Gonzalez and bagled Davydenko, he wasted two match points in the match with Davydenko because of a Shakira moment, he lost concentration.

Even when Rafa had been No2 in the world for X number of years, it was always like Ooooh, he has a tough match against some No 26 in the world or whatever!

carrie , 3/11/10 2:33 PM

he beat Soderling in un formal match
he begaled Davy in a set in a match won by DAVYDENKO!sorry if that news to you
he beat Gonzlaz? he is number 10 now?is he now your caliber
Did you watch TMC.where he didnt win a set!
the policy of underdog that he used for long time is the reason of these massive results!
loved the line:
(he wasted two match points in the match with Davydenko because of a Shakira moment, he lost concentration.) ..............typical

tennislover , 3/11/10 3:37 PM

I don?t think Rafa deserves to be accused of losing the concentration over Shakira!! He is far better than that! And I do not think Shakira was even there! She was there last year, not this year! Anyway, such a ridiculous way to justify why Rafa wasted two match points...

natashao , 3/11/10 4:02 PM

Tennislover I was at the O2, I know what happened. Anyway, that's all history now, let's see what happens in the future. Rafa doesn't deserve all this pessimism, after he owns Roger Federer!

nastasho, the Shakira moment was to inject some humour into it. Shakira was around at the end of last year, I think that's when the video was filmed.

carrie , 3/11/10 4:32 PM

YEAHH RAFALITES ! VAMOOSSS !!BRING IT ONNNN!!!
lol.... anyone please give me details abt the exho ! 10.30 pm Us time na?? which one is first up? ladies or men? and anyone aware of available streams??

vamosrafa , 3/11/10 5:06 PM

Rafael Nadal will play his first grass court tennis since winning Wimbledon in 2008 after announcing plans to play at the AEGON Championships at The Queen?s Club in June.

In 2008, Nadal became the first man in history to win the ?treble? - taking titles at the French Open, The Queen?s Club and Wimbledon in a single, glorious month, but last year, knee problems prevented him from defending his grass-court titles. He can?t wait to put that right in 2010.

Vamos!

carrie , 3/11/10 5:06 PM

vamosrafa, in the UK the women's h4h is on at 3.30 pm and the men's at 6, so I assume the girls are first.

tennislover, give Rafa some respect, after all he owns Roger, and Roger will be the first to admit that the one person he fears is Rafa!

carrie , 3/11/10 5:09 PM

Oh god i am dying of laughing carrie! Afraid of a person with no knees. Have you seen nadal's facebook page?? 'Either I'll have to sex change and play WTA or play wheelchair tennis,no? Both I cant do my favorite hobby of pick-ass tennis, no? So, I'm confused what to do?' Who is scared of a wimp like that??

Ricky is great!
Of course Muzza only will win but Cilic will be tough ok.
I hope Muzza gets an easy player in the final like Nadal. Mr.Arthritic is like an unseeded qualifier now! I still think that Nadal should have been made to play in the qualifiers and first round ok! he is not good for giving a 'bye' only to say 'bye'!!! ha ha

Go Muzzaaa!!! Indian wells Champion!!!

Why is Nadal always being painted as the underdog, no matter who he is playing.

Vamos!
carrie , 3/11/10 9:15 AM

rafa always paints himself as the underdog! This is the way he likes it! It's called mind games.

maxi , 3/11/10 8:16 PM

maxi, you got this bit wrong -

This Season: Doha (HC): Lost to Davydenko (6) 6-0 6-7 46 F
it was 0-6 not 6-0!!!!!!!!

carrie , 3/11/10 8:20 PM

Who says Nadal has not beaten a top 10 player in a while, he's beaten Soderling and Gonzalez and bagled Davydenko.

When?

maxi , 3/11/10 8:20 PM

yeah, thanks for that carrie. was 0-6, 6-7, 4-6. at least it made you happy for a second carrie. unfortunately for rafa, he still lost to davy didnt he? any further comment?

maxi , 3/11/10 8:24 PM

actually it was 6-0, 6-7, 4-6 itself :) whoever got bageled won right? So..

FEDistheGOAT , 3/11/10 8:51 PM

maxi, do you really watch tennis?

carrie , 3/11/10 8:58 PM

yes carrie i do. I checked out gonzales and also soderling, and i know it was around 13 months ago, the way you were talking, i thought that maybe rafa had beaten them, about 2 months ago - so whilst i watch as many tennis matches as i can, i know there is also a possibility that i may have missed a smaller tournament, perhaps a 250 or something?. you get very defensive carrie,if you dont mind me saying when i ask for information, as you are a rafa fan, i thought perhaps you would be happy to help, clearly i was wrong.

maxi , 3/11/10 9:24 PM

FiG is correct: maxi got it right the first time but got caught out by carrie, heehee. If we place rafa's score first, it was right to say that final result at Doha was indeed 6-0, 6-7, 4-6. First set a bagel in Rafa's favour.

I just love reading you two having a go at each other. It really helps the Chardonnay-flavoured hemlock go down.

gorafago , 3/11/10 9:39 PM

gorafago thanks for that. would be good if carrie could apologise for her mistake.just i didnt notice that, and i doubt whether carrie did either. i thought that if anyone would know, it would be carrie. looks like she didnt, and i should have more confidence in my own posts goraf, shouldnt I?!!!
anyhow the final result remained didnt it? rafa lost, but i find it odd that she can celebrate a bagel by rafa and then not mention anything about him losing. always thought it was a strange result. you would have thought rafa would have won that, but he just lost the edge. glad you enjoying your wine.none for me tonight though!

maxi , 3/11/10 10:01 PM

gorafago!yes. carrie "officially" gets something WRONG about rafa!

maxi , 3/11/10 10:05 PM

No actually rafa won first set 6-0 so technically, technically he won that match ok! I agree with carrie. After 6-0, you must win doesn't matter, especially to chicken-legs davy boy! i hate davy more than nadal! hmph!
Both davy and Mr. PornStar (nadal) have exact same face cuts no? These scary faces makes it diff to watch matches with my girl friends.. they'll be like Who ARE these freaks?? So ugly yew and all.. What to do!

GoMuzza , 3/11/10 10:22 PM

Kudos to carrie for mentioning that /Rafa is the only man to win French,Queens and W imbledon in open era! Fed did the double last year but Rafa winning Queens as well made his more impressive! oops! I am surely going to get grief now from a Fed Fan! who loves to always mention about Rafa's losses! there is a comment on the Aegeonchampionship site from the director toward Rafa's commitment to Queens, suggest you read it for those who doubt him. Good luck Rafa, vamos always!!!

afrodite7 , 3/12/10 12:29 AM

maxi, Rafa beat Gonzo in the US Open (bageled him in the final set), which is the most recent time they played.

Denizen , 3/12/10 5:34 AM

afrodite,i've never referred to rafa's losses before.never.

i was picked up by carrie for a so-called "mistake" and because i thought she knew something about rafa's game, she would let me know about the "recent" wins. she didnt. also, i am pleased i quoted my stats correctly, carrie got it wrong.when you get something wrong, or misquote it, be big about it, all i am saying. we all human, unfortunately, carrie takes things that seriously, you cant have a joke with her at all.and then she points the finger saying

maxi, do you really watch tennis?
carrie , 3/11/10 8:58 PM

crazy!

carrie, do you really watch tennis? do you really know rafael nadal's wins/losses?do you know how to post a proper score?

my turn to smile - for once.
and she's gone.cant be big enough to come and apologise. she got it wrong.

maxi , 3/12/10 7:30 AM

denizen,

thanks for giving me the information - that was all i was asking from carrie. cheers.

maxi , 3/12/10 7:31 AM

Fed was the underdog for A)2010 and he won.

torres9 , 3/12/10 8:52 AM

actually it was 6-0, 6-7, 4-6 itself :) whoever got bageled won right? So..

FEDistheGOAT , 3/11/10 8:51 PM

FIG, you are so wrong, the score according to the ATP is recorded like this, as it is always:

ATP World Tour

2010 Doha
Qatar Hard F Davydenko, Nikolay
0-6, 7-6(8), 6-4 Stats

The way you and maxi show it, it looks like 3 straight sets in a best of 3 match. I was not going to challenge you on this, because I assumed it was a mistake as I am well aware that you know how scores are shown, but since your disciple, maxi, wants to use it to attack me, I thought I would put you straight.

maxi, I have other things to do than sit here responding to your rubbish. I find it hard to communicate with people who don't get it. What was I wrong about? You suggested that Rafa hadn't beaten a top 10 player since Madrid 2009, and when I pointed out that he had beaten Gonzalez and Sod, you said that was not the case, and wanted to know when. If you don't know, then there is not point communicating with you, because you obviously don't know who beat whom and when.

carrie , 3/12/10 9:38 AM

maxi,

NOW WIPE THAT SMILE OFF YOUR FACE!

carrie , 3/12/10 9:41 AM

gus i cannot find out anything abt the hit for haiti !! has it taken place already?? :S

vamosrafa , 3/12/10 10:53 AM

vamosrafa,
I hope this is some help.

HIT FOR HAITI 2 - Agassi/Nadal v Sampras/Federer - March 12th, Indian Wells - 19-02-2010, 12:26 AM
This will be a feature of the the Indian Wells Masters event (BNP PARIBAS OPEN) and is scheduled to be played on Friday 12th March.

"Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, who combined have won 44 Grand Slam singles titles, will compete in a "Hit for Haiti" fundraiser on March 12 of the BNP Paribas Open in efforts to raise a minimum of $1 million for Haiti relief efforts."

"The event will feature Roger Federer and Pete Sampras playing Rafael Nadal and Andre Agassi.
The event will be broadcast live on the Tennis Channel beginning at 7:30 p.m."

Indian Wells, California - A combined 50 Grand Slam titles will be on court when next week's Hit for Haiti 2, set for the Indian Wells Masters, ramps up its fund-raising potential with a women's exhibition featuring Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, Justine Henin and Lindsay Davenport. The elite four will be added to a men's mix which is to include Roger Federer and Pete Sampras playing Rafael Nadal and Andre Agassi.

The charity event for earthquake victims will duplicate the successful effort organized the day before the start of the Australian Open by Federer, with the California edition set for March 12.

The tournament, now owned by software billionaire Larry Ellision, will channel an expected minimum one million dollars in donations to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief and Development fund.

The charity hit will be broadcast live around the world and streamed on the internet, with television firms donating productions costs and satellite time, tournament officials said.

thanks a lot carrie.I am just confused abt the time zones a bit...after how many hours from now is it gonna start :S

vamosrafa , 3/12/10 12:56 PM

finallyi got it...the exho is due to take place at the centre court, 2nd last match ...7.30 pm (california time) ladies and then men.... roughly 11.5 hrs from now tick tock tick tock :D

vamosrafa , 3/12/10 1:53 PM

maxi,
Both Roger and Rafa played 19 tournaments last year, Roger only won 4 titles and Rafa won 5, considering Rafa was injured for most of 2009. I don't know what you were trying to prove by listing Rafa's losses in 2009, but in 2009 win/losses: Rafa - 64/14, Roger 61/12, so they are virtually evens, but to split hairs, Roger won 80% of his matches and Rafa won 78% of his.

Rogers Losses:

Doha..............................Andy Murray
AO..................................Nadal
I/W................ .................Andy Murray
Miami..............................Djokovic
Monte C...........................Wawrinka
Rome............................ ...Djokovic
Montreal............................Tsonga
USO.......... ........................Delpo
Basel.................................D jokovic
Paris..................................Benneteau
WTF........ ............................Davydenko
............................... ...........Delpo

So if you want to spell it out, he lost to A. Murray twice, Djokovic 3 times, Delpo twice, and if Rafa was fit and well for the whole year, who knows what his win over Roger would have been in 2009. You write as if Federer never loses, well he does!

Vamos Rafa!

carrie , 3/12/10 2:23 PM

carrie,
"The way you and maxi show it, it looks like 3 straight sets in a best of 3 match"?????????????
You don't know how to record scores after all these years of watching tennis. The ATP is right posting Davy's name first as the winner. However, maxi was posting Nadal's name first so her score was right. FIG corrected you and you still didn't get it.

maxi,
Keep that smile on your face. You were right.

chr18 , 3/12/10 2:30 PM

I thought he was saying Davy beat Rafa 6-0.

carrie , 3/12/10 2:51 PM

Rafa 6-0, 6-7(8), 4-6

Davy 0-6,7-6(8), 6-4

Both Rafa and Fed had an average W-L record in 2009 but Fed performed way better in Slams.

torres9 , 3/12/10 3:04 PM

First of all maxi, I apologise, I read your statistics wrong, I just saw 6-0 and saw red.

torres,
Rafa won 1 out of 3 GS contested, and Fed won 2 out of 4, and don't forget that Rafa played the USO straight from injury time out, with a strapped stomach. I watched the USO SF between Delpo and Rafa again today, and Rafa made a lot of UE, because he was hampered, and his serve was well below par.

carrie , 3/12/10 3:46 PM

Sad to see after all this time away, that nothing has changed here. Still the same characters saying the same things 200 different ways.

Just want to wish all the IW players good luck and good health and hope we see some great tennis!!!! As always, no one knows who will win until the last ball is played!

fan4tennis , 3/12/10 5:26 PM

that is rite carrie,

But Fed record in Slams is: F W W F
Rafa is : W 4thRnd Ret and SF

So clearly, Fed performed way better.

Doesnt have anything to do with IW anyway.

torres9 , 3/12/10 7:47 PM

torres, Rafa was injured for most of last year, so don't try and compare him to Fed in 2009.

carrie , 3/12/10 9:05 PM

Injury is part of the game especially Rafa's

torres9 , 3/12/10 9:37 PM

carrie, it's fine, i just think that with you "seeing red" as you described yourself, may be if you can, try to be a bit calmer. you posted post after post attacking me, and i wasnt attacking you at all. i was trying to find out when the last time was that rafa won against a top ten, I only asked you as i honestly thought i had missed a tournament (i watch as much tennis as i can, but sometimes not possible). so i hope that you can see now what you can be like when you misread things? thanks anyway and dont worry about it.
good luck to rafa, roger, pete and andre tonight. i wish i was there, and its all in a good cause which is great news.

maxi , 3/12/10 9:48 PM

maxi,
Keep that smile on your face. You were right.
chr18 , 3/12/10 2:30 PM

thanks chr18.

maxi , 3/12/10 9:58 PM

maxi, the Rafa-vs-Top-10 stat is (depressingly) easy: Rafa has won one ATP tour match against a then-current Top-10 player since his defeat of Novak Djokovic in the Madrid SF on May 16, 2009. He defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France in the Paris TMS 1000 QF last November by a score of 7-5, 7-5. Tsonga was world-ranked No. 10 at the time.

Rafa has defeated several players who were seeded in the Top 10 in a given ATP event, but not actually world-ranked Top 10, in the same period. He has also defeated several players whio had been ranked inside the world's top 10 at some previous time in their careers. [And he looks like doing the same again tonight based on his early break of the Ancic serve just now.]

But yes, it's just the one win against Top-10 opposition since his return from the post-RG layoff.

However Rafa is off to a bright start this week. IW has been good for him before. Perhaps his fortunes are about to change.
