  • Mac tennis academy dream won't die

    3/10/10 4:07 AM | Johan Lindahl
Mac tennis academy dream won't die John McEnroe can't give up on tennis even a few decades removed from his career. So the 51-year-old is moving closer to the dream of his own tennis academy.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion admits he's worried about the state of the game which he and Jimmy Connors helped to dominate in the 1970s and 1980s.

To remedy the situation, Mac is hoping to kick-start his programme at a venue near his native New York sooner rather than later.

With the weekend elimination of the US in Davis Cup first-round play at the hands of Serbia, McEnroe complained: "Tennis has fallen by the wayside to some degree here, not on the radar the way it was when I was playing [Bjorn] Borg and Connors.

"We were getting a lot of attention. We need to do more. I'd like to see more kids playing tennis. ... I'm finally getting to the point where I'm going to get this tennis academy that I've long talked about."

The veteran is still active in the senior game, competing last month in Florida and playing this weekend in Zurich.
