  • Federer in Indian Wells quarter with Roddick, Baghdatis

    3/10/10 4:48 PM | Ricky Dimon
Federer in Indian Wells quarter with Roddick, Baghdatis Roger Federer's path to the Indian Wells semifinals appears to be far from daunting, but it could include both Marcos Baghdatis and Andy Roddick. Also in the top quarter of the draw are Gael Monfils and Radek Stepanek.

Few of the top seeded players were dealt difficult draws at the Indian Wells Masters, and Roger Federer is no exception.

The world No. 1 will kick off his campaign against either Victor Hanescu or Juan Ignacio Chela. In a stroke of almost unbelievable irony, Hanescu and Chela also played each other in the first round of the Australian Open in the exact same part of the draw, with the winner (Hanescu) meeting Federer in round two.

Federer's nearest seed in Indian Wells is No. 27 Marcos Baghdatis, whom the top-seeded Swiss is slated to battle in round three. That could end up being Federer's most difficult test prior to the quarterfinals, as his potential fourth-round opponents include Tommy Robredo, only a real threat on clay courts, and a slumping Radek Stepanek.

Although Federer and Andy Roddick are three wins each away from a possible quarterfinal showdown, anticipation can begin now with Federer in an unimposing eighth of the draw and Roddick in a similarly mediocre section that includes oft-injured Gael Monfils. Federer is a well-documented 19-2 against Roddick, but a matchup in Indian Wells would be their first since the memorable 2009 Wimbledon final in which Federer prevailed 16-14 in the fifth set.

Roddick could face No. 30 seed Janko Tipsarevic in the third round before an encounter with either Monfils or David Nalbandian. While Nalbandian has been out for almost a year due to a bad hip, he won two crucial Davis Cup rubbers last week in Argentina's 3-2 victory over Sweden. Nalbandian could be trouble in Indian Wells for Jurgen Melzer (round two) and Monfils (round three).

Richard Gasquet is another dangerous floater in the top quarter of the draw. If the Frenchman defeats Simon Greul in his opener, he will go up against compatriot Monfils.

The Hanescu/JIC encounter leading to Fed is improbable and coincidental but not ironic. Despite the W final last year I doubt anybody outside the U.S. is looking forward to another Fed/Roddick match. The sooner Roddick falls out of the top ten and is replaced in American tennis by Isner and Querrey the better...and not just DC.

its all three

and i doubt many people even inside the U.S. are looking forward to Fed-Roddick

I am, or rather, I wouldn't mind it. Although the "rivalry" is one-sided, many of their recent matches have been tight.

In fact -- and I realize that I might have to turn in my tennis-analysis card after this one -- I contend that one of the best men's matches I ever saw was Fed-Roddick in the quarterfinal of the 2007 U.S. Open. On paper, it was a straight sets wipeout, but the first two sets, which both went 7-6 to Fed were as good a two sets as you'll ever see. Two hours of guys raining haymakers on each other and each had more aces (let alone winners) than they did errors (and neither had more than a dozen total by the start of the third set).

It was high-level and high-wire; it couldn't last, but it was fun while it did.

SenorPlaid , 3/10/10 10:40 PM

And a few more things that made it stand out, now that I think about it: It was a night match, both were wearing black head to toe and Andre Agassi was up in the booth showing that he might have been even better as a commentator than as a tennis player.

SenorPlaid , 3/10/10 10:45 PM

I think we can see Roddick v Murray then!

GoMuzza , 3/10/10 11:17 PM

Should be interesting.
Allez Roger!

USO07 Roddick vs. Federer
that was one great match, good play from the men in black,i thought Roddick played the match of his life, but Roger was so patient in that match , the set point in the second set that return of the serve was Roger in action in that match you could tell that if Roddick was in different era than Federer's he would propably done much better and i think chr 18 that Roddick done for US in the DC more than he did to himself so you are little harsh on him.
2007 form of Federer was so effecient not as explosive as 2006 but more excutive the delivery at high standers was the tiltle of it. good memories SenorPlaid specialy that i was there for the semis and the final, the time of life

tennislover , 3/11/10 1:31 PM

tennislover,
I have not questioned Roddick's contribution to DC or his patriotism. His attitude and vile personality on the court are what I have been critical of. He still hasn't grown up.

chr18 , 3/11/10 1:35 PM

he is quite a character but that what he is like ,he cant help it sometime he over does things with the judges and the screaming but i have to say he got little better than before

GoMuzza , 3/11/10 6:32 PM

GoMuzza, do you need a bit of help?

maxi , 3/11/10 9:26 PM

hi maxi see this-

Ump: Mr. nadal you have to resume play inside 20 seconds

Nadal: Wow, 20 seconds no? New rule?

Ump: I have warned you about this before.

Nadal: No? Old rule? I keep forgetting that rules apply to me, i am so dumb cute no? Sorry i'm too dumb to understand so many rule no?

Ump: Sir, we cant make different rules for one player!

Nadal: Special treatment was always given to me in school because i have this problem with understanding.... then i flunked school <sniffs>

Ump: Terribly sorry ok? but you disrupt...

Nadal: Si si, Is it one minute now? So sorry next time i'll take only 50 seconds..

Ump: Sir, please...

[Nadal digs deep into his reservoir of inner strength inside the backside of his shorts and then brings his hand up and sniffs at it with satisfaction]

Nadal: No? No? 20 seconds?

Ump: ye...

Nadal: But how can I clean my behind in such less time ump? Give me 3 minutes no? i have to arrange my botles no?

Ump: I'll have to give you an official warni..

Mr.Arthritic: Ok ok next time 20 seconds.

[play resumes]

Ump: Mr Nadal, I really have to give an official warning now...

Mr.TennisWedgie: What sir? oh i took more than 20 seconds?
[Umpire covering the mike]
Ump: Are you playing with me sir? Ye..

Nadal: But I am sorry how can anyone KNOW 20 seconds?

Ump:I am here for..

Nadal:I wont next time ok.... just warn me if you notice.. 50 seconds right?
[ump sighs and says "BALLS', luckily it WAS time for balls!]

etc..

etc.. until three umpires retired and went to mental hospital!!

This is a real genuine ok ok actual conversation recorded in a tennis match!!! Now we know why rafa always gets away with time wasting and butt picking! he is just too dumb for anyone to have a conv with him!! he just doesnt understand and since he is mr.arthritic superstar, umpires give in, they cant say publicly that this Porn super star is too dumb to understand warnings!!

Maxi yes everybody needs help to stop being fans of a pron star and become of a tennis star like Muzza!

Go muzza the most intelligent, most fit, most handsome player EVER!

GoMuzza , 3/11/10 10:07 PM

Gomuzza seems to be from that hospital. Even a schoolkid will have more brains than that. Have a nice laugh Gomuzza. Hopefully u would add more sensible comments when you grow up.

vmk1 , 3/12/10 12:21 AM

GoMuzza:

Nadal: Wow, 20 seconds no? New rule?

^^^^^^

Good one.

vmm , 3/12/10 1:01 AM

i've told you, GoMuzza is nobody but torres/attacker: just another coward who doesn't have the courage to say certain things under the name of torres! when did the words of a coward mean anything?

memi , 3/12/10 2:29 AM

gomuzza,

i've just skipped your post. it's far too long and far too repetitive and just boring.
you seem to be having fun with yourself.

maxi , 3/12/10 7:37 AM

another retard at tennistalk.om....sad!

vrael , 3/12/10 8:07 AM

Rafa and Djoker consistently violate the 20sec rule, the umps donot call them on it.

AceIt , 3/12/10 2:22 PM

Did I get it right that GoMuzza is a FEMALE fan of Murray? Why otherwise would she (or he?) ask him to marry her (or him?)? But, the nasty language and sick comments just seem to be too much for a girl/ lady like...I am really confused now...She/he definitely needs some professional help...the treatment, as far as I can tell will be a long and painful process..

natashao , 3/12/10 4:02 PM

Now, now, natashao, same-sex marriage is very much the thing this season, you know. Best wishes to GoMuzza in making an honest man of Andy some day.

gorafago , 3/12/10 4:55 PM

@GoMuzza 3/11/10 10:07 PM...

If you really wrote that up, them you are not as stupid as you pretend to be. So here is some friendly advice.. Don't be so harsh of rafa and go easy on the language. Without the bad mouthing that could even have been funny.

This is a time when rafa is recovering from injury and even closet fed fans would take offense at the way you are going at him. Everyone is concerned for rafa right now..

He IS just a young kid after all even though he is already a giant, nobody can help feeling for him and wishing him well. And don't worry there are no murray haters here.. So you dont have to go around with a flaming sword and 'convert' people! :)

I will give you a link so that you appreciate fed and nadal a bit, I have a feeling you haven't been seeing the sport for long, just let me hunt for it and I'll post it here or on the blog about roger-rafa rivalry..

Cheers mate, take a chill pill.
