Fernando Gonzalez clinches a spot for Chile in the second round of the Davis Cup World Group on Monday afternoon. He defeats Dudi Sela in straight sets to give the host nation a 3-1 victory.
Chilean hero Fernando Gonzalez put his country in the Davis Cup quarterfinals by dispatching Dudi Sela 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 on Monday afternoon in Santiago. Gonzalez needed two hours and one minute to give Chile an insurmountable 3-1 lead over visiting Israel.
Chile was rocked by an earthquake at the beginning of March and Gonzalez dedicated the win to victims, saying that he hoped it would give them "small happiness."
"The important thing was to win, whichever the way," added the world No. 10. "We are very happy with this victory and we hope it is something to get happy about for all the people affected by the earthquake."
Gonzalez, who owns gold, silver, and bronze Olympic medals while representing his native land, went 2-0 in the first-round tie against Israel. He overcame Harel Levy in four sets to open the proceedings on Saturday after they were delayed by one day following the earthquake. Gonzalez has pulled out of this week's Masters event in Indian Wells in order to stay in Chile and help the disaster relief effort.
Chile, meanwhile, will host the Czech Republic in July with a spot in the Davis Cup semifinals at stake.
