Robin Soderling must win his singles rubber to keep host nation Sweden alive in the opening round of Davis Cup competition. The World No. 7 is scheduled to meet Leonardo Mayer Sunday afternoon.
Robin Soderling looks to level the tie with Argentina, as Sweden trails 1-2 heading into a live reverse singles rubber on Sunday. The 25-year-old, who lost in doubles with partner Robert Lindstedt, captured the opening point of the tie on Friday. Soderling recorded a 6-1, 7-6, 7-5 victory over Davis Cup newcomer Eduardo Schwank in two hours and 30 minutes.
The 73rd-ranked Mayer earned a point for Argentina after downing Joachim Johansson in the second singles rubber of the day. The 22-year-old dug out of a set deficit to post a 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 win in three hours. Friday’s success marked the first victory for Mayer in Davis Cup competition. The Argentine made his debut in 2009, where he and teammate Jose Acasuco lost their doubles match to Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek.
Should the tie extend to 2-2, Argentine captain Tito Vazquez indicated a strong possibility that team stalwart David Nalbandian would contest the fifth rubber. Nalbandian, continuing to recover from a right leg injury he sustained in Buenos Aires, paired with compatriot Horacio Zeballos in doubles to give Argentina a 2-1 advantage on Saturday.
