  • Nalbandian seals 3-2 victory for Argentina

Nalbandian seals 3-2 victory for Argentina With the opening-round of Davis Cup competition on the line at 2-2, last-minute singles replacement David Nalbandian defeated host nation Sweden’s Andreas Vinciguerra in four sets.

Argentine Davis Cup stalwart David Nalbandian was called to singles action, after Robin Soderling leveled the tie with Argentina early Sunday. The French Open finalist pulled host nation Sweden to 2-2, as he handed Davis Cup newcomer Leonardo Mayer a 7-5, 7-6, 7-5 defeat without dropping serve. Soderling withstood 25 aces from the Mayer racquet to record the critical victory in two hours and 32 minutes.

For the second time in two days, team captain Tito Vazquez elected to substitute Davis Cup veteran Nalbandian for his original player choice. The 28-year-old paired with compatriot Horacio Zeballos in doubles on Saturday, notching a key point for Argentina as the two took out Robin Soderling and Robert Lindstedt, 6-2, 7-6, 7-6.

Sweden and Argentina had split two singles rubbers prior to the doubles match, with Soderling and Mayer pocketing wins on Friday.

Nalbandian trailed the 232rd-ranked Vinciguerra 1-3 in the opener, but rallied to steal the set 7-5. Despite surrendering the third set, the Argentine focused to snag one service break in sets two and four. Nalbandian converted four 5 five break point opportunities during the two-hour and 35-minute contest, winning just his fourth match after undergoing hip surgery last May.

Argentina will travel to Russia, who took out India 3-2 on home soil, for the Davis Cup quarterfinal in July.

Seven-time champion Sweden must secure a World Group Play-off victory in September to keep their top-level Davis Cup status. Sweden has not suffered World Group relegation since 1999.
