2009 Davis Cup champion Spain will host Switzerland this weekend, as the Federer-less team rolls into Logrono.
Spain has won the Davis Cup two years running, a testament to the depth of their team. They surely do not have their very best players available for this first-round tie; Rafael Nadal, Fernando Verdasco and Juan Carlos Ferrero are all ranked higher than David Ferrer.
Still, the Spanish team, with Ferrer and Nicolas Almagro anchoring singles and Tommy Robredo and Marcel Granollers handling the doubles rubber, will be difficult for the Swiss.
Stanislas Wawrinka will be, as he often is, the leader of the Swiss team. The world No. 19 represents Switzerland’s best chance at posting some wins this weekend. His first singles rubber is against Nicolas Almagro, a player ranked beneath him at No. 40 in the world. When singles are reversed and Almagro is forced to take on David Ferrer, life gets much more difficult for the Swiss.
Marco Chiudinelli has come on of late, but clay veterans Almagro and Ferrer will be a big ask for him. This tie is Spain’s for the taking – Switzerland is likely to find itself out in the first round again.
