Robin Soderling faces Eduardo Schwank as they open the first day of Davis Cup competition in Sweden. The players hit the court Friday afternoon in Stockholm.
French Open finalist Robin Soderling meets World No. 64 Eduardo Schwank on Friday, as host nation Sweden kicks off the tie with three-time Davis Cup runner-up Argentina. Sweden has captured seven Davis Cup crowns since 1925, including three in both the 80's and 90's. Soderling ensured his country’s place at the highest level of Davis Cup competition, helping to down Romania 3-2 in the 2009 World Group Play-off.
The World No. 7 holds a combined 9-3 record in Davis Cup, earning eight wins in singles and one in doubles. The 25-year-old, who made his debut in 2004, snagged his maiden singles rubber against Brazil in 2006.
Soderling enters Friday’s match with a 6-3 mark in 2010, aided by a title-winning run in Rotterdam (def. Youzhny). The Swede sees action for the first time since a quarterfinal finish to Michael Llodra in Marseilles.
Davis Cup newcomer Eduardo Schwank will attempt to earn an inexperienced Argentine squad its first point. The 23-year-old makes his first appearance Friday afternoon, filling in for seasoned former members including Juan Martin Del Potro and Juan Monaco.
He is joined in Stockholm by fellow Argentines Leonardo Mayer, Horacio Zeballos and stalwart teammate David Nalbandian, named as a possible last-minute replacement during the tie. Nalbandian, who has collected 27 Davis Cup wins since 2002, suffered an abductor tear in Buenos Aires last month.
Schwank has complied a 4-4 record this year. The Argentine booked two clay-court quarterfinal berths in 2010, reaching the last eight in Santiago (lost to Bellucci) and Acapulco (lost to Gonzalez).
Expect the speed of an indoor hard-court to heavily favor the far more experienced Soderling.
