Leonardo Mayer pulled Argentina out of a 0-1 hole Friday, after rallying to defeat Sweden’s Joachim Johansson in four sets. Robin Soderling had earned the first point with a comfortable win over Eduardo Schwank.

Robin Soderling led early, aided by a shaky start from Schwank, who dropped his opening service game. The World No. 7 collected two breaks in 26-minute first set, having lost just five service points. Soderling lost a break lead twice in the second, but regrouped in the tie-break. The Swede won seven consecutive points in short order, extending his advantage by two-sets-to-love. A close third set followed, with Soderling earning match point at 6-5 with Schwank serving. The 25-year-old snagged the first point for Sweden, connecting on a backhand return winner.

Leonardo Mayer leveled the tie for Argentina, rallying from a set deficit to down Joachim Johansson in four sets. The 22-year-old struck 28 aces on his way to a 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 victory in three hours and 1 minute. Mayer saved six of 7 break points, including a key break-point in the fourth set. After pocketing a break of serve in set one, Johansson failed to take another. The Swede had trouble controlling his unforced errors as well, committing 46 during the match.
Doubles teammates Robin Soderling and Robert Lindstedt aim to break the tie on Saturday, as they square off against Argentine pair Leonardo Mayer and Horacio Zeballos.
