Singles action will get underway in Santiago, Chile on Saturday. The host nation will be hoping that veteran Nicolas Massu can put Chile on the scoreboard against Harel Levy.
Nicolas Massu and Dudi Sela will be squaring off for the second time in their careers when they meet in the opening singles rubber of the delayed Chile vs. Israel Davis Cup tie on Saturday afternoon. Their previous encounter also came in World Group action, with Sela prevailing 6-3, 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-4 two years ago on the hard courts of Israel.
This time, however, Massu has home-court advantage on the clay of Santiago. Otherwise a slight underdog on paper at No. 92 in the world to Sela's 66th, the always-rowdy Chilean crowd is sure to give Massu a fighting chance in this one. You can bet both Massu and his entire country are hungry for some good news--and a win--after last weekend's earthquake.
In the latter stages of his career at 30 years old, Massu is spending the majority of his time on the Challenger circuit and he is just 1-2 at the ATP level this season. The Chilean reached a Challenger final earlier this season, but he coming off two straight losses in ATP qualifying events.
Sela is 4-6 on the ATP World Tour in 2010 and he has suffered two consecutive first-round defeats, in Memphis and Acapulco. The 24-year-old Israeli is a decent clay-court player, but he he is at his best on slow hard courts.
Look for the Chilean fans to drive their man to a grueling five-set victory.
