Davis Cup newcomer Leonardo Mayer of Argentina takes on Joachim Johansson and host nation Sweden in the second singles rubber scheduled on Friday.
Leonardo Mayer is set to contest just his second career Davis Cup effort on Friday. The 22-year-old Argentine made his Davis Cup bow last year, falling with doubles partner Jose Acasuso to Czech Republic stand-outs Radek Stepanek and Tomas Berdych. Friday afternoon’s clash signals the first foray into singles competition for the Corrientes native.
Mayer, entering the weekend ranked World No. 73, holds a modest 6-5 record in 2010. The Argentine has two quarterfinal-round finishes to his credit, having booked final eight spots in Sydney (lost to Benneteau) and Delray Beach (lost to Gulbis).
The 373rd-ranked Johansson returns to Davis Cup competition for the first time since 2007. The 27-year-old Swede took part in a losing semifinal effort with the United States, where he crashed out to Andy Roddick in three sets. Johansson recorded his sole Davis Cup singles win over Sebastian Grosjean of France in 2005.
The Swede has not contested an ATP World Tour singles match since late October 2009. Johansson returned to Stockholm after career-threatening shoulder injuries kept him out of commission for three years.
