Tennis powerhouse France will come up against Germany in the opening round of Davis Cup this weekend on the hard courts of Toulon.
Gael Monfils and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will anchor France’s Davis Cup team in singles, Philipp Kohlschreiber and Benamin Becker will be on tap for Germany.
Monfils and Kohlschreiber will take to the court first on Friday. Monfils has been struggling with some injuries this year, but he owns a tidy 2-0 record over the German and both of the matches they’ve played have been on hard courts.
Kohlschreiber has had a reasonably successful year so far in 2010. The German made the semifinals in Auckland and he had a quarterfinal result in San Jose. Monfils is ranked 15 spots ahead of Kohlschreiber at No. 15 in the world. France should take the early lead.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Benjamin Becker will follow the first rubber. This should be a clear-cut win for Tsonga. Unless the Frenchman falters badly, he should run through the rubber in easy straight sets.
France for the 2-0 lead.
