Spain’s David Ferrer helped erase a 1-0 deficit to Switzerland with a straight set victory over Marco Chiudinelli.
The Switzerland-Spain Davis Cup tie is all tied up at 1-1 after David Ferrer soundly beat Marco Chiudinelli on Friday evening. The Spanish team started with a Nicolas Almagro 5-set loss to Stanislas Wawrinka.
The first set played out as many of Ferrer’s matches do – with a number of service breaks. Ferrer is a fierce returner, especially on clay, and Chiudinelli felt the sting of the Spaniard’s return game. Three service breaks for Ferrer and one for Chiudinelli marked an easy first set for the Spaniard.
Chiudinelli showed some grit in the second set. Ferrer broke the Swiss man early and served for the set at 5-4. Chiudinelli managed to break back, leveling the set and eventually forcing a tiebreaker. Ferrer, who is accustomed to working hard in his matches, simply went back to work in the breaker. He took advantage of opportunity when it presented itself and closed out the second set with 7-5 in the tiebreak.
The effort Chiudinelli expended in the second set was apparently too much for the Swiss. Ferrer got an immediate break in the third set and from then, he rolled to a 6-1 victory.
