Fernando Gonzalez, who will not play in Indian Wells and instead help out his earthquake-stricken country, will face Harel Levy on Day 1 of the Chile vs. Israel Davis Cup tie.
Fernando Gonzalez has endured a hard week, like all Chileans, in the aftermath of last weekend's earthquake. The world No. 10 has already pulled out of the upcoming Indian Wells Masters in order to remain in his country and help in the relief effort.
Things should get better for him on Saturday, however, as he faces a first-ever meeting against Levy. At 29 years old, Gonzalez is still in outstanding form and he is often at his best when he is playing for patriotic pride. A gold (2004) and silver (2008) Olympic medalist in singles and a gold medalist in doubles (2004 with Massu), Gonzalez owns an awesome 29-12 record in his Davis Cup career, including 18-6 in singles.
In the latter stages of his career at 31 years old, Levy registers at No. 118 in the world. He rarely makes ATP appearance, but came up huge last year in Davis Cup for the surprising Israeli team. Levy lost Tomas Johansson 8-6 in the fifth set of the first rubber of a first-round tie against Sweden, then he bounced back two days later to win the decisive rubber over 8-6 in the fifth over Andreas Vinciguerra. In a quarterfinal upset of Russia, Levy dismissed Igor Andreev in straight sets.
Levy is clearly capable of more surprises, but beating an inspired Gonzalez in a hostile environment is hard to imagine. Gonzalez in straight sets is the obvious pick.
