  • Djokovic puts Serbia in the driver's seat against USA

    3/5/10 11:49 PM | Ricky Dimon
Djokovic puts Serbia in the driver's seat against USA Novak Djokovic beats Sam Querrey in four sets to give Serbia a commanding 2-0 lead over the United States in a first-round Davis Cup tie on Friday evening in Belgrade. The Serbs will look to finish the job on Saturday afternoon.

Novak Djokovic beat Sam Querrey 6-2, 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-3 to give Serbia an overwhelming 2-0 advantage against the United States in their first-round Davis Cup showdown on Friday. Despite losing the momentum of a two-set lead and dropping the third, Djokovic recovered to prevail in three hours and 25 minutes.

Viktor Troicki defeated John Isner earlier in the day to put the host Serbs out in front, and just as break points were the story in that one (Isner converted only two of 11 chances), Querrey failed to capitalize on his opportunities in set one. Djokovic eased through the opening frame of play and he saved both of the break points he faced before serving out the set at 5-2.

Querrey had a far better chance in the second. The 6'6'' American seized his first break for 2-0 and built a 3-0 advantage, but he gave it back midway through the set. Even after that disappointment, Querrey got a look at four set points with his opponent serving at 4-5. Djokovic saved all four, however, and a tiebreaker was necessary two games later. With momentum still in hand, the second-ranked Serb raced through the decider 7-4 for a huge two-set lead.

Faced with an imposing deficit and playing like he had nothing to lose, Querrey started to turn things around in set three. The world No. 22 earned a pair of breaks and saved Djokovic's lone chance to force a fourth set without any difficulty.

For Djokovic, it appeared to be a wakeup call. The crowd favorite broke Querrey immediately in the fourth and final set for 2-0 and consolidated it the rest of the way. Serving for the match at 5-3, Djokovic suddenly ran into a never-say-die Querrey, who saved four match points--two with spectacular play, one courtesy of a botched forehand volley by Djokovic, and one thanks to a sprayed backhand off the Djokovic racket. Finally, though, the Serb won it on his fifth chance with a massive forehand winner.

Serbia now looks poised to reach the Davis Cup quarterfinals for the first time its history. Nenad Zimonjic is expected to team up with Janko Tipsarevic to take on Americans Bob and Mike Bryan player profile" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #000">Bryan.

I did get to watch the end of this match ... very exciting with Sam fighting hard at the end. Great for Serbia if they can get the win either tomorrow or Sunday.

smr , 3/6/10 12:28 AM

Oh doubles HAS to go to the US with the Bryans playing. Ricky, now is the time for a prediction! Please? Final score line?

FEDistheGOAT , 3/6/10 12:33 AM

zare , 3/6/10 12:53 AM

well done boys!
I wondered at the selection of Troicki over Tipsarevic, but he does present a better combo in the doubles w Zimonjic!
C'mon boys!!!

bianca , 3/6/10 1:49 AM

Bryans will win, then Djokovic will straight-set Isner.

Serbia 3, USA 1

mike bryan is out with food poisoning. isner is teaming up with bob bryan http://twitter.com/justingimelstob

i think it's gonna be serbia: 3 usa: 0 by the end of the day

Sib69 , 3/6/10 1:38 PM

wow, seems like a tough doubles match! good for isner!

stu , 3/6/10 6:41 PM

Well at least big John got to be a part of one win. Djoker is going to be too tough though I think.

chr18 , 3/6/10 7:09 PM

hmm food poisoning at Djokovic's restaurant?

:P

stu , 3/6/10 7:19 PM

Go USA, umm food poisoning didn't help 2-1, now Sam and John must pull it out or play one of the twins McEnroe.

AceIt , 3/6/10 8:11 PM

Serbia is not supposed to beat USA in anything, they better loose this tie or face the military attack.

vmm , 3/7/10 12:07 AM

haha, stu, I had the exact same thought when they told us "good news". :D
Anyway, congrats to USA! That point in 3rd set on 6:5 for Serbia...hmmm..I watched replay N times tonight... I still can't believe that Zimonjic stopped the game...Pity! Janko hit such a great winner. That decided the whole match. Definitely.
So, Nole, it is on you! Make us proud tomorrow! Go, SERBIA!

OllyK , 3/7/10 1:44 AM

"Serbia is not supposed to beat USA in anything, they better loose this tie or face the military attack."

that would greatly support Nobel prize for peace awarded in 2009. but hey, that was in 2009 and now is 2010, so why not and then get another one in 2011?

rfzr , 3/7/10 3:41 AM

"umm food poisoning didn't help 2-1"

If it was MEANT to help, I am glad it didn't work. Would hate to think anyone wanted to hurt someone on purpose just so the favorite team could win.

@Vmm & @ Rrzr,
LOL! :)))

Am going there in about an hour. Keep fingers crossed for Nole :).
GO SERBIA!!! :)

PS: There is a small, cute group of animated Americans dressed in white, blue and red cheering for their boys.

danica , 3/7/10 1:09 PM

Djoker is becoming Marat Safin!

chr18 , 3/7/10 4:58 PM

this is a really good match!

stu , 3/7/10 6:06 PM

Isner is the man sure raised his game! Djoker has to fail much more flamboyantly to be a safin. @danice :) thanks for pointing that out! we had a laugh about that!

FEDistheGOAT , 3/7/10 6:14 PM

Djoker is losing some fans and some respect today regardless of whether he wins or loses. Extremely poor sportsmanship on display today.

chr18 , 3/7/10 6:39 PM

Wow this is a very exciting match up ... look at Isner go. The atmosphere there must be so on edge.

smr , 3/7/10 6:47 PM

whats poor chr18? the racquet smash?

stu , 3/7/10 6:55 PM

chr18, you owe Ricky a beer, Serbia won.

Isner's chances at the FO 2010? Anybody?

rfzr , 3/7/10 7:32 PM

Congrats to Serbia.

smr , 3/7/10 7:34 PM

what an amazing electric atmosphere! you must have had a blast Olly/ danica/ whoever else was there!

Isner - RESPECT.

stu , 3/7/10 7:38 PM

Lost the streaming coverage :( can someone update me? or give link with live scores that doesn't require flash?

FEDistheGOAT , 3/7/10 7:46 PM

Isner was awesome today. All in all, he played about 11 hours, 13 sets (won 6). Really, really great effort. He almost knocked Nole down in the middle of Belgrade and on soft, red clay. Congrats. I must add, his forhand is lethal. Extremely good, fast and strong. He said his goal is to get to the top 10 this year. I am sure he deserves the spot. And I will be rooting for him to achieve that.

Stu, yes, it was a great event and crazy atmosphere :)

danica , 3/8/10 12:31 AM

stu, congrats! We WOOON!!!! :) I lost my voice from cheering today!!! It was really awsome. More than 15000 ppl on stands....Wow! I expected good atmosphere but this was G.R.E.A.T!! I was so happy for Nole..he started to cry at the end...That is how much this victory means to him!
And what to say about Isner! He will be top10, I agree, Danice! Great performance today!!
Did you see what Nole said about Isners serve: "Isner fought like crazy, and his serve was unbelievable. His serves are coming like from the fourth floor, and I had no idea where they would go.? Hehe! Exactly! :)
One more time, congrats to Serbs and Serbia fans! :)

OllyK , 3/8/10 1:02 AM

I hope you post pictures somewhere Olly!

Aww he only cries at these patriotic events - the only other time I remember is the Olympics, the only time so far that I have grudged Rafa his success!

stu , 3/8/10 1:46 AM

I will post them on facebook, stu, as soon as my friend send them to me cause he was the one holding camera..I was too nervous to do that! :) So if you have profile there...
Nole IS a big big patriot...And I am one of those crazy Serbian "girls" who always cries with him! I cried at Olympics, I cried after Madrid sf last year, I cried yesterday... :)

OllyK , 3/8/10 10:24 AM
