The Spain vs. Switzerland first round Davis Cup tie will forge on without the talents of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. First up will be Nicolas Almagro and Stanislas Wawrinka.
Without the help of world No. 1 Roger Federer, Switzerland is almost completely outmatched in this first round tie. Spain will be at home on their native red clay and even without Nadal, their team includes 2 players in the top 25 (Tommy Robredo and David Ferrer).
Switzerland simply doesn’t have the depth of Spain’s team. Stanislas Wawrinka is the team’s top-ranked player at No. 19 in the world with Marco Chiudinelli coming in at No. 56.
Spain is starting clay-courter Nicolas Almagro against Wawrinka. They’ve met on 2 other occasions and split the wins at one each (both matches came on hard courts). Wawrinka had a good start to the year when he made the final in Chennai, but he faltered at the Australian Open, where he lost in the third round. This is the first time he has played since Melbourne.
Almagro has the benefit of having played a couple of clay court tournaments going into Friday’s rubber. The Spaniard was upset in the first round of Buenos Aires, but he advanced to the quarterfinals in Acapulco.
Wawrinka has a chance to win this match, but Almagro should come through in the end.
