Australia will have to settle for a live stream of this weekend's Davis Cup tie with Taiwan.
The turf war raging over the administration of Australian tennis has spilled over to this weekend's Davis Cup Asian zonal tie with Taiwan as opponents of Tennis Australia blast the decision to limit
coverage to internet streaming only.
There will be no airing on cable or free-to-air TV of the contest in Melbourne which will be missing Lleyton Hewitt, recovering from his second hip surgery.
"At this stage, if you want to watch Australia in Davis Cup it will be through live streaming on the Tennis Australia website," Hewitt's manager David Drysdale told local media. "How can you say you are promoting the sport if you put a competition which means as much to Australia as Davis Cup on a website?
"I know Lleyton is not playing this week, that it's not a World Group tie and that the opposition is not that strong. But this is still Davis Cup and there is the chance Bernard Tomic (youngest Aussie at age 17 ever to be picked for a team) is going to make his debut.
"We just come off a fantastic Australian Open, a lot of money has been made - are they saying they don't have the money to broadcast it?"
Tennis Australia is sticking to the decision as it comes under increasing attack from opponents who are tired of the 20-year-reign of boss Geoff Pollard.
Former doubles star and 12-year Australian Open tournament director Paul McNamee is bidding again for the job as elections loom for later in the year. Mac was rejected by a narrow margin when he ran last autumn.
Players Hewitt, Pat Cash, Peter Mcnamara, Liz Smylie and Jason Stoltenberg have all come out in support of their colleague, with the tennis establishment looking to get their own man into the powerful position.
